in general I always think the argument about fanfic writers being treated badly is some overhyped fringe audience speaking too loudly
however. seeing posts like this, seeing the mass of people agreeing.
uhh. my eyes are being opened. what the actual fuck is going on.
second take of the day: this entire Ao3/fanfic discourse is literally just people confusing personal boundaries with gatekeeping.
pro-piracy advocacy is about fighting the gatekeeping of culture and knowledge. dismissing a writer's (worker's) wishes is pro-consumerist.
fanfic was never gatekept to begin with. gatekeeping is about deciding WHO gets access to a resource. this discourse is not about that. creatives are telling you what you can and cannot do with the thing they created that represents a piece of themselves.

yes i do think writers should be awarded more respect and consideration, especially since the ao3 shutdown has made it very obvious that they are the backbone of fandom. no i don’t think it’s entitled to ask to be treated like human beings instead of content machines.
if i were writing fanfic exclusively for the sake of it, i'd just be daydreaming about them or keeping the fic stored in a folder where nobody can give me unsolicited criticism. i *publish fanfic* because i want to infect you with my brainworms and watch you suffer.
that being said, personally, i do not take much of an issue with people redistributing my work as long as nobody strips me of my authorship. i will (probably, hopefully) upload my current fanfic to tumblr soonish, though.
no, pro-piracy arguments don't work on fanworks. fanworks being free doesn't mean that you are not doing any harm by distributing a work nonconsensually. fanworks being free means they were never a commodity to begin with and don't deserve to be treated as such.
maybe i should post my fanfic onto tumblr while ao3 is down.
maybe i should actually rewrite that goddamn second chapter first that i keep procrastinating on.
does the average naruto fan believe that shisui would've been disappointed in itachi or hated him if he'd known a massacre would come to pass? or is it just a group of particularly vocal fans?
i really do hope there's no correlation between people's perception and ethics regarding fictional victims/survivors and their real-life counterparts. read too much shit about sasuke/itachi on the internet.
what if i were one of those people who post long twitter threads about their fanfic ideas instead of writing actual fanfic...
