By kind courtesy of Brookings, we get to take another, closer, look at the issue of trade among African states: brookings.edu/articles/intra… Here is the lowdown: 1. You would hear a lot of people talking about how low trade among African countries is and has been. 2. They will often mention a number that is anywhere from 15% to 18%. 3. They will compare the number to the supposed equivalent in Europe (anything between 65% to 68% depending on source). 4. They will lament how insidiously bad this is. 5. Then praise God that the African Union and its agencies and affiliates have medium to long-term targets for boosting intra-Africa trade share (ranging from 25% to 50%). 6. In this piece, we warn about turning this stat into some kind of fetish. 7. Because when you look closely it turns out that things get arbitrary very quickly, and it doesn't always measure what we think it is measuring. 8. Due to peculiarities of the current economic structure. 9. We end by proposing some less sexy but more meaningful metrics for gauging African integration in a way that can still command some public and political attention. 10. While acknowledging that sexy statistics are very stubborn beasts to slay.

Think the heat is messing with my brain so I wondered to myself why a country like Japan with harsh winters would produce an airconditioning giant like Daikin. The company's origin is in metal works (that's what Daikin means) but the most interesting thing I learnt is that Japan's dense housing and small apartments favoured room by room systems (unlike America's larger houses where a central system works better) i.e. wall mounted and split-unit ACs. Split units of course were easier to sell in much of the world where people who could not afford to cool a whole house could at least cool one or two rooms.

Nigeria’s agricultural productivity deficit stems from overlapping institutional failures across seed supply, credit, insurance, extension, market access, and land tenure that collectively prevent smallholder farmers from adopting or benefiting from technologies that work.

A proud moment for me to be recognised by the FT, not just as a detractor, but “one detractor”

I made a similar point in my post for @1914Reader today. Development policy should focus on firms 1914reader.com/p/billionaire…
"Without the differential performance of the top three firms, Korean real GDP per capita in 2011 would have been 20.8% lower, and the net present value of welfare over the whole period 6.6% lower. Most of this is due to productivity."

On Frontier Matters , our CEO @hmryder discusses what it will take for Africa to strengthen its role in global manufacturing and capture more value from trade. As duty-free access to the Chinese market creates new opportunities for African exporters, the focus is increasingly shifting towards how African economies can produce more, export more and build industries that can compete globally. I've listened to practically every podcast Efosa Ojomo has been on. This was another good one, especially the jobs part that complements the recent article. open.spotify.com/episode/03d…

Jobs are not the goal. They are the output of consumption. When people consume more, businesses hire more. This is why a consistent commitment to market creation matters more than almost anything else in development.

A humanoid robot crushed the world record for a half marathon. But not before it crashed near the finish and had to be set straight by 'simple' humans. Forget performance-enhancing drugs; get ready for an era of performance-enhancing technologies. Athletes will put technologies inside their bodies to become Olympic champions.
This Chinese humanoid robot just shattered the world record for a half marathon, finishing in 50 min 26 sec. This video shows its crash just meters before the finish line where it had to be picked up by a team of humans. The robot is from Honor, the smartphone maker and Huawei spin-off. This robot was teleoperated while others were autonomous. It seems like all the robots had battery swaps along the way.

Spent the week having (too many) conversations about NGR. This @1914Reader piece expresses it well “Taking reforms beyond short-term stabilisation towards structural transformation requires a new kind of political leadership & elite bargain than we have” 1914reader.com/p/reform-is-n…
