It’s harvest time in Florida. Each bag contains fruit from a single plant that has been crossed to a specific other line. Seed will be extracted and plants grown from it will be evaluated in the next cycle. Chances are, it won’t be good enough. #plantbreeding

Lobe count in bell peppers can range from 2 to 5 or more. It is determined by a combination of genetics and environmental conditions at the time of fruit setting. It has nothing to do with the sex of the pepper! More on that later...

Are these actual existing gene edited products or just ideas of them? Wasn’t aware there were many products available after all the hype. Would be cool if it actually delivered.

Bell pepper mechanical harvest in California. Machine is a modified tomato harvester. It still requires a good sized crew to operate, but it moves quickly. Downside is the damage it does to the peppers, making it only useful for processing use, not fresh market.
The coordination and efficiency required to harvest a field like this escapes most. It’s a thing of beauty!

Program efficiency is paramount in plant breeding. Leads to engaged employees and high quality seed and data.
Flexibility is needed though, like deciding on the fly to make a cross based on breeder intuition.
