Our latest paper "Topological Jackiw-Rebbi states in photonic van der Waals heterostructures" in Light:Science & Applications nature.com/articles/s41377-0… shows that quasi-bulk van der Waals materials can serve as a new platform for topological nanophotonics.
Fully funded PhD in "Advanced optical nano-imaging and nano-spectroscopy of novel semiconductors and quantum materials" in 2D Materials group in Sheffield. Funding available for UK and international students.
Apply here by the deadline 29 January 2025: findaphd.com/phds/project/ad…

First demonstration of a topological photonic crystal in a quasi-bulk van der Waals material WS2: pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs…
The WS2 nanophotonics platform is similar to silicon-on-insulator: exfoliated 200 micron flakes (30-300 nm thick) are attached directly to SiO2.
Registration is open for 3rd Quantum Optics and Nanophotonics Winter School, 15 - 16 January 2025, University of Sheffield, UK
Early-bird deadline 30 November 2024. Register here: sites.google.com/sheffield.a…
We've put together an exciting programme of tutorial-type talks.

15-16 January 2025, Sheffield. Visit our website to see the list of speakers, to register and submit your poster for this exciting event that attracted more than 100 participants in its 2024 edition sites.google.com/sheffield.a…
PhD graduate #19 in the group, Oscar Hutchings. Pictured here with his examiners Oleg Makarovskiy and Luke Wilson. Congratulations!
2nd International Workshop on 'Near-field Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy' in Sheffield was a success! 35 experts discussed the latest in optical near-field techniques and exciting science pursued in this still budding field. Thanks to all attendees and Attocube for sponsorship!
Submit your work and register for the 2nd International Workshop on 'Near-field Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy', Sheffield, 12 Sept 2024
Abstract deadline 2 August. Registration by 23 August.

Read about the most sophisticated nanophotonic structures made so far from multilayer transition metal dichalcogenides in our new work on WS2 topological photonic crystals: arxiv.org/abs/2407.05908. Van der Waals materials are wonderful not only in their monolayer form!
Registration is open for the 2nd International Workshop on "Near-field Optical Imaging and Spectroscopy", 12 September 2024, University of Sheffield: sheffield.ac.uk/nearfield-op…. Register to attend demonstration of our setup by Attocube on 11 September. Bring your own samples!
Our latest work "High Q Hybrid Mie-Plasmonic Resonances in van der Waals Nanoantennas on Gold Substrate" is online pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs….
Use of quasi-bulk high-refractive-index TMDs opens new approach for achieving high-Q nanophotonic structures in visible and near-infrared.
New PhD project in our group in Sheffield: "New concepts and advanced materials for quantum nanophotonics". In this project we will extend the ideas developed for atomically thin 2D materials to nanophotonics. Apply here: findaphd.com/phds/project/ne…
Our new paper in Advanced Materials applies alloying in atomically thin semiconductors for band structure engineering in van der Waals heterostructures. This work is dedicated to Alessandro Catanzaro who led this research during his PhD in Sheffield. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…
Our new work on "Nonlinear Rydberg exciton-polaritons in Cu2O microcavities" has just appeared in Light Science and Applications. Great UK/Germany collaboration crucially supported by a Centre-to-Centre EPSRC grant between Sheffield and TU Dortmund. nature.com/articles/s41377-0…
Our new paper on magneto-elastic coupling in antiferromagnetic 2D MnPSe3 is out. We see in Raman that vibrations of the non-magnetic sublattice are sensitive to the spin order in the antiferromagnet. Fruitful collaboration with Daniel Wolverson from Bath. nature.com/articles/s41699-0…
Dr Catherine Phillips (University of Sheffield) - winner of the best poster prize at the Sheffield Winter School on Quantum Optics and Nanophotonics.
Congratulations!!!
The prize was sponsored by Quantum Design (qd-uki.co.uk/).
It was an excellent meeting with 100 attendees! We'll do it again in January 2025, watch this space for Sheffield Winter School in Quantum Optics and Nanophotonics: sites.google.com/sheffield.a…. Thanks to our sponsors: EPSRC, Quantum Design, Teledyne Princeton Instruments
