Saudi Arabia is trying to buy peace from a regime that sees every negotiated pause as weakness and preparation for its next attack. Saudi Arabia keeps miscalculating, believing that appeasement and financial incentives will deter a regime that treats every concession as proof that aggression works. Earlier this year, Pakistan’s Asim Munir reportedly used a private oil-transport venture involving IRGC commander Ahmad Vahidi to secure a temporary halt in Iranian strikes on Saudi Arabia. Months later, the Iran-backed Houthis resumed their attacks with IRGC assistance. That is not diplomacy failing. It is the Islamic Republic’s operating model. The regime accepts money, commercial arrangements and temporary normalization when it needs relief. It pauses escalation, rebuilds its leverage and resumes pressure once the strategic moment improves. Saudi Arabia has repeatedly treated the Islamic Republic as a conventional state seeking security, revenue and recognition. But the IRGC is an ideological military organization built to export the 1979 revolution and extend the regime’s influence beyond Iran. The Axis of Resistance is the instrument. Hezbollah, the Houthis and Iraqi militias allow the regime to attack its rivals while denying responsibility and limiting direct retaliation against itself. Saudi Arabia has paid heavily for that model. Since 2016, the Houthis have launched 1,104 ballistic missiles and 1,135 drones at Saudi territory, alongside 118 explosive boats and 278 naval mines. The 2019 Abqaiq-Khurais attack temporarily removed roughly half of Saudi oil production and about 5 percent of global supply. During the 2026 escalation, missiles and drones again struck airports, energy facilities and civilian infrastructure, killing dozens and injuring hundreds. The economics favour the attackers. Cheap drones force Saudi Arabia to fire interceptors costing millions of dollars. Even unsuccessful attacks disrupt flights, raise insurance costs, frighten investors and undermine the image of stability required for Vision 2030. Saudi Arabia has answered with defensive systems, limited proxy strikes, mediation and new agreements. What it has rarely done is impose sustained military costs directly on the IRGC infrastructure enabling the attacks. That restraint has created a dangerous reputation. Saudi Arabia is viewed as a valuable target that can absorb repeated attacks while remaining reluctant to escalate against their source. The Islamic Republic does not need to conquer Saudi Arabia. It only needs the ability to threaten its airports, pipelines, ports and oil exports whenever it wants concessions. Commercial deals cannot resolve that conflict because the regime’s objective is not simply profit. It seeks regional dominance, the removal of American power and revolutionary influence across the Muslim world. For the Islamic Republic, agreements are tactical pauses. For Saudi Arabia, they are mistaken for peace. Until aggression produces consequences greater than its rewards, every payment risks financing the next missile, every pause gives the Axis time to reload and every agreement postpones the next attack rather than preventing it.
If this is true, this has shades of reports from earlier this year when Pakistan offered a joint oil venture with the IRGC's commander-in-chief Ahmad Vahidi to stop #Iran's regime's attacks on the Kingdom. Months later, the Houthis started striking the Kingdom with IRGC assistance on the ground. israelhayom.com/2026/10/26/s…

$MSFT offers 60,000 employees a voluntary exit. 60K Y’all!! First time this has ever been offered at Microsoft and it will affect employees in India, The United States, Canada, and the UK at level 70 or below… Employees find out in a few hours if they are being targeted for this. This just makes me think that H127 layoffs sound intense. Is this a pre-layoff round? Also makes me wonder if they changed some scheduled layoffs due to be called out by @VP. Peace offering? 🤔 Timing is just interesting. More to come.
$MSFT Microsoft's job cuts aren't done, and Xbox is where to watch next. Asha Sharma is reportedly planning three more rounds: this month, November and January. 1,868 jobs are gone against a 3,200 target, so roughly 1,300 more are coming. Spreading cuts across a whole year is a choice. It keeps the margin story moving and leaves everyone who's left waiting. I'm watching for the October round.

Jahrhundert in ihm verheizt.

Construction continues at Iran's mountain airbase with underground hangars, known as 'Eagle 44', despite at least three rounds of strikes this year, according to TWZ, which reviewed Planet Labs satellite imagery from September 29th. TWZ’s account of the strikes is based on imagery, a New York Times report and an analysis by imagery provider Soar Atlas. Eagle 44, also called Oghab 44, is an Iranian Air Force base in Hormozgan province, about 100 miles northwest of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s state media unveiled it in February 2023. TWZ says the September imagery shows a new taxiway section completed on the western side, with the next segment prepared but not yet paved, and obstacles removed from the runway. The imagery also shows what appears to be damage from Israeli and U.S. airstrikes. Craters are visible near the western tunnel entrances. Two support buildings are destroyed and a third is damaged, with no rebuilding visible. The four tunnel entrances appear intact, but it’s unclear whether they are open or sealed. TWZ says a second taxiway would ease a bottleneck for launching and recovering aircraft. That is its interpretation. What’s inside the mountain, and how many Iranian fighters remain, is unknown. TWZ notes administration statements that Iran’s air force has been destroyed, including U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Admiral Brad Cooper telling Congress in May that Iranian sorties were “zero,” and says U.S. and Western officials have also said Iran has rebuilt faster than expected. Source: twz.com/news-features/constr…
Iran is rebuilding Eagle 44, a hardened underground airbase carved into the side of a mountain that can shelter fighter aircraft, drones, and potentially cruise and ballistic missiles, despite the remote facility absorbing at least three rounds of airstrikes this year. High-resolution satellite imagery captured by Planet Labs in late September and reviewed by TWZ shows a new section of taxiway completed, several support buildings still destroyed or damaged, wrecked equipment cleared off the pavement, and obstacles that were placed to obstruct the runway now removed. Construction is ongoing at a time when the Pentagon and Trump administration maintain there is little remaining of the Iranian air force for such a facility to protect. Pretty much. As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers. SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue. That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.

The conditions allowing for the safe return of Ms. Machado to Venezuela is the direct result of the U.S. supported reconciliation talks which has already seen hundreds of political prisoners freed and hundreds of political opposition figures return from exile. The United States expects the freedoms of all sectors of Venezuelan politics to continue to be respected. Likewise, we expect all political actors to support these talks which represent the best chance Venezuela has had in thirty years to peacefully achieve not just a free and fair election but an enduring democracy.

“Don’t be stupid.” He ran Microsoft PR for decades. And @maryjofoley had a hugely influential analyst newsletter on Microsoft. I remember interviewing at Microsoft and it was in every lobby. Todd has long covered the Seattle tech world on his podcast and blog. @Buzzmodo sent me this and said “nice shoutout” and it was. But after getting to listen to the whole thing, this really gives insights about how media has changed over the decades, and how a company works with influencers and guides the story about itself. Frank has recently retired, so gives an inside view that usually isn’t shared. I helped write the original social media policy for Microsoft and later in the interview Frank talked about the first rule “don’t be stupid.” I wrote that after talking to many in the early days who got fired because of something they wrote in their blogs. I had a chapter in my book I wrote about how businesses were using social media before Twitter/X started about them. Still good advice. :-) Great discussion.
