As FC Barcelona and Real Madrid prepare to meet in El Clásico today, October 25, we revisit the story of Alfredo Amarillo Kechichian, the Uruguayan footballer of Armenian descent who wore Barcelona’s famous red-and-blue shirt alongside Johan Cruyff. Born in Montevideo in 1953 into a family of Armenian origin, Kechichian’s journey reflects the extraordinary reach of the Armenian diaspora, shaped by displacement, resilience and the determination to build new lives far from an ancestral homeland. His football career began at Nacional Montevideo before taking him to Spain in 1973, where he joined Real Valladolid. His performances attracted Barcelona’s attention, and in 1976, he secured a move to one of the world’s most prestigious clubs. At Barcelona, Kechichian shared the pitch with legends Johan Cruyff and Johan Neeskens. During his two seasons with the Catalan giants, he made 42 official appearances, scored three goals and was part of the squad that won the 1977–78 Copa del Rey. One of his finest moments came on November 28, 1976, when he struck a spectacular left-footed volley in Barcelona’s 6–1 victory over Valencia. The goal was named the best of the month in European league football. After leaving Barcelona, Kechichian played for Salamanca, Espanyol and Mexico’s Neza before returning to Uruguay, where he ended his professional career with Danubio. His legacy now has a modern parallel: Swedish winger Roony Bardghji, whose paternal grandfather was Armenian, joined Barcelona in 2025. Nearly half a century later, Kechichian’s name remains a lesser-known chapter in Barcelona’s history. Yet his career represents more than football: it reflects the achievements of Armenians and their descendants across continents, and the enduring presence of Armenian heritage on the world stage. As millions turn their attention to El Clásico tonight, his story deserves to be remembered.

On October 24, 1993, during the First Artsakh War, Armenian forces launched a major counteroffensive toward Horadiz, a strategically important railway junction on the southern front. The operation was carried out by units of the Hadrut, Martuni, and Central Defense Districts of the Artsakh Defense Army, following renewed Azerbaijani attacks against Armenian positions earlier that month. On October 10, Azerbaijani forces resumed military operations toward Hadrut. A second offensive followed on October 21 near Jrakan, where Azerbaijani troops captured several strategic positions, threatening Armenian defenses along the southern front. On October 24, the Artsakh Defense Army launched a counteroffensive, neutralizing Azerbaijani firing positions around Horadiz and disrupting enemy defenses. During the operation, Armenian forces captured three T-72 tanks, several combat vehicles, and substantial quantities of ammunition and military supplies. Horadiz was strategically significant because of its railway junction, which connected Azerbaijani military positions across the southern districts. Armenian control of the junction disrupted Azerbaijani supply and transport routes toward Jrakan, Kovsakan, and Sanasar. The counteroffensive developed into a broader military campaign. By the end of October, Armenian forces had advanced toward the Araks River, capturing the Minjavan railway station and establishing control over Kovsakan and its surrounding areas. By early November 1993, Armenian forces controlled the territory stretching from the Horadiz railway junction to Armenia’s state border, significantly altering the military situation along the southern front.

On October 24, 1929, renowned Armenian actor, director, and national figure Sos Sargsyan was born in Stepanavan. One of the most celebrated figures in Armenian cinema and theater, Sargsyan appeared in more than 40 films, including Triangle, We Are Our Mountains, Nahapet, Khatabala, and Dzori Miro. He also appeared in Andrei Tarkovsky’s internationally acclaimed film Solaris (1972). In 1991, he founded the Hamazgayin Theatre, which he led until his death. Beyond his artistic achievements, Sargsyan was deeply involved in the Artsakh Liberation Movement from its earliest days in 1988. Following the anti-Armenian pogroms in Sumgait, Sargsyan, artist Sargis Muradyan, and writer Zori Balayan coordinated assistance for Armenian refugees arriving in Yerevan. According to Sargsyan’s own recollections, their efforts raised approximately 6 million Soviet rubles and helped resettle 25,000 Armenian refugees in Artsakh, providing financial assistance and support to families rebuilding their lives. Sargsyan also opened his own home to displaced Armenians seeking help. He was among the prominent intellectuals who served on the Council of Elders established alongside the “Karabakh” Committee, contributing to the national movement during a defining period in Armenian history. In 1991, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) nominated Sargsyan as its candidate in the first presidential election of independent Armenia. Sos Sargsyan passed away on September 26, 2013, at the age of 83, leaving behind a legacy that extended far beyond the stage and screen, encompassing his lifelong commitment to Armenian culture, national identity, and Artsakh.

Nice Mayor Eric Ciotti has announced plans to propose granting honorary citizenship to 20 Armenian hostages illegally held in Azerbaijan, demanding their immediate and unconditional release. The announcement came during an October 22 ceremony at Nice City Hall, attended by members of the local Armenian community and French historian Jean-Christophe Buisson. Portraits of the 20 hostages, including former Artsakh political and military leaders, were displayed outside City Hall alongside ribbons in the colors of the Armenian flag. Ciotti condemned Azerbaijan's continued imprisonment of the captives, accusing the Azerbaijani regime of attempting to erase them from public memory. He pledged that Nice would continue advocating for their freedom. The ceremony also drew attention to Azerbaijan's September 2023 military attack on Artsakh, which resulted in the ethnic cleansing and forced displacement of more than 100,000 Armenians from their ancestral homeland. Recalling that Nice had welcomed survivors of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, Ciotti reaffirmed the city's historical ties to the Armenian people, declaring: "Nice knows your faces, your names. Nice does not forget you." The proposed honorary citizenship would serve as a symbolic recognition of the hostages and a public expression of the city's demand for their release. The measure has not yet been formally adopted. Earlier, on October 3, Ciotti joined 24 other French political figures in signing an appeal demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Armenian hostages held by Azerbaijan.

A new investigation published by Vanity Fair alleges that Azerbaijani banks played a significant role in channeling billions of dollars through secret financial arrangements involving Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law and former senior White House adviser. The October 22 report, written by investigative journalist Matthew Cole, draws on Dutch intelligence surveillance of Kushner’s hacked phone, which reportedly revealed access to a UAE bank account that had received hundreds of millions of dollars through Azerbaijan. According to the investigation, approximately $750 million contributed by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates was routed through an Azerbaijani bank into an account at First Abu Dhabi Bank to which Kushner had access. Dutch intelligence initially assessed that the sending account was linked to the Azerbaijani government. The report further alleges that, by spring 2018, approximately $1 billion had been transferred from the UAE to Israel through Azerbaijan for Kushner. Cole describes Azerbaijan as playing a significant role in international money laundering, reporting that some Azerbaijani banks facilitate large-scale currency transfers through arrangements that obscure the original source of funds, charging fees of approximately 6% to 7%. The revelations raise serious questions about Azerbaijan’s role in opaque international financial networks and the potential use of its banking system to conceal politically sensitive transactions involving foreign governments and senior American officials. Kushner’s legal representatives denied his involvement in the alleged accounts and maintained that he had complied with applicable laws.

One security guard was left bloodied during the altercation. Opposition arrests, reported electoral violations and controversial political alliances have overshadowed Armenia’s October 25 local elections, set to take place across 21 communities covering 357 settlements. Nineteen communities will elect local councils through party and alliance lists, while Fioletovo and Shamiram will hold majoritarian elections. In five communities, Pashinyan’s ruling "Civil Contract" party faces no opposition on the ballot. On October 21, the "Independent Observer" alliance reported 70 campaign violations, including alleged misuse of administrative resources and pressure on opposition candidates. In Stepanavan, "Strong Armenia" lead candidate Arsen Gevorgyan was arrested on October 21, four days before the vote, alongside 13 others. Gevorgyan was subsequently remanded in custody for two months over alleged vote-buying. "Strong Armenia" has denounced the case as politically motivated persecution by Pashinyan’s government. In Goris, Mayor Arush Arushanyan, who previously blamed Pashinyan for the loss of Artsakh, now heads the "Solidarity" alliance between "Civil Contract" and the "Business" Party. His former opposition stance contrasts with his current alliance with Pashinyan’s ruling party. The alliance faces the "Living Vote" alliance, led by Argam Hovsepyan and formed by the "Country to Live" and "Armenian Vote" parties. This carousel examines nine communities, identifying the political parties and alliances contesting the October 25 elections.
