30 CDO AU - Lt. Commander Ian Fleming told them before they went to France in the summer of 1944: "You can't behave like Red Indians any more. You have to learn to be a respected and disciplined unit."

This day in 1944, British elite forces of No. 30 Commando raided a Kriegsmarine HQ at Cherbourg, capturing 20 officers and 500 men. Meanwhile, the US 79th Division captured Cherbourg garrison commander Von Schlieben. Cherbourg was captured days later. #WW2

I was privileged to spend the day with Bill Marshall recently. He landed in Normandy just before D-Day, entered Paris with Le Clerc on the day of Liberation, and dug up rocket-fuel secrets buried by Nazi chemists in a wood. A modest, unpretentious, plain-speaking, unsung hero.

Good to see 30 AU represented in the new upper hall at the D-Day Experience. They landed on Utah and Gold and were able to recover important German archives in Cherbourg

30 Cdo AU - Unlocking the Secrets of the Kriegsmarine - Helmuth Walter factory - prototype high speed midget submarine scuttled in May 1945 in the Plöner Sea, later raised by #RoyalMarines which had searched for the boat. Later they scrapped it in Kiel. royalmarineshistory.com/post…
