Great tread on @v1punks
the cryptopunks you see everywhere, the ones owned by celebrities and mostly web3 natives? those are v2 punks. think of them as the official, final, polished version of the project.
but before that final version, there was a first draft. an original set of punks that were released with a critical bug in their code. these are the v1 punks.
let’s break it down:
/1. in june 2017, @larvalabs launched cryptopunks with a significant error. a bug in the marketplace contract allowed buyers to claim a punk and immediately withdraw their payment, leaving sellers with nothing.
the creators stepped in to solve this issue by deprecating the entire contract, airdropping a new, fixed version, the v2, abandoning the originals.
/2. but on ethereum, code is law, and you can’t delete history.
the abandoned v1 contract and its 10,000 punks remain on-chain, a permanent, verifiable record of the project's true genesis.
they’re not copies but the original digital artifacts, disowned by their creators but preserved by the blockchain itself.
/3. for years, they were considered digital fossils.
then, in 2021, a grassroots movement of nft archeologists, led by figures like @franknft_eth, recognized their historical significance.
this wasn’t a flawed project but the first draft of the most iconic nft collection in history. a community rescue mission began.
/4. the solution was a brilliant piece of web3 engineering called a wrapper.
this smart contract allows v1 punk holders to lock their buggy asset and receive a new, fully erc-721 compliant token in return. it makes the punks safe to trade on modern marketplaces while preserving the integrity of the original, historical contract.
/5. this creates a clear investment thesis, provenance vs. brand.
v2 punks represent the official, polished product, backed by @yugalabs. v1 punks represent the raw, historical manuscript, the verifiable first edition.
in a world of infinite digital copies, verifiable on-chain history is the ultimate economic moat.
/6. the social layer reflects this distinction.
the v1 community ogs like like @seanbonner, operate with a different ethos.
it’s a culture of digital historians and provenance purists who value the story and the artifact over simple brand recognition.
/7. you are not betting on a pfp. you are betting that in the long-term, the market will assign a higher premium to the first immutable record of a culturally significant asset than it does to the "official" version that came second.
it's a bet on the core value proposition of blockchain itself.
/8. the long-term vision is compelling. to me, v1 punks are not just an alternative collection, they’re a foundational piece of blockchain history, saved by the very community ethos that web3 champions!

Hey @coingecko — any chance we could get a way to track floor prices for the 999/10k club ENS domains?
It’s a core part of the ETH ecosystem and deserves proper visibility like NFTs. Would be 🔥 to see floors, sales, and charts on your platform. #ENS #999Club #10kClub

The floor of 4 digit ENS has moved up to 0.04 ETH
Might not seem like a big deal but they have been trading at almost 0 for a while now
Getting of the ground is the hardest part since people can't justify the renewals at floor prices this low
All that's needed is some momentum

Replying to @ZssBecker
What if I told you that you could still buy a CryptoPunk for under $10,000?
