Tiles as Topography with Parneet Pahwa What if you could create your own landscape? ⛰️ Join us for ‘Tiles as Topography’, a two-day studio intensive with ceramic artist Parneet Pahwa where you will transform a simple clay tile into a landscape featuring depth, contour, and texture! On day one you’ll look at references like erosion and aerial views, then you’ll start building your first tiles. On day two you’ll incorporate slips, underglazes, and graffiti to bring the surfaces to life. Finally, everyone’s tiles will come together into one shared terrain. Join us for ‘Constructing the Invisible City’, a studio seminar exploring the invisible social rules that shape how we share and experience public space! Start with a guided field trip to Mina Zayed, observing how different spaces influence the ways people move, interact, and spend time together. Building on these observations, you’ll then work in small groups to imagine fictional societies with their own values, traditions, and customs, and consider how they might inhabit the same streets differently. Meet Juma Alhaj, the artist behind 'Revelation'. ‘Archipelago of Whispers’ explores alternative infrastructures for knowledge-making such as whispers, murmurs, hums, gossip, and storytelling. It examines how speech and silence, the felt and the known, the self and the other, can overlap and shape our understanding, and continuously flow into one another. When was the last time you paused to reflect on the world around you? In ‘Revelation’, Juma Alhaj’s debut institutional solo exhibition, you’ll move through distinct spatial conditions featuring artworks rendered with glass, light, and ink, arriving at ‘Hijr’. In each space, the artist draws the viewer into a deeper mode of contemplation, using gestural strokes of paint and engravings on glass to explore themes of reflection and self-discovery. 'Revelation' by Juma Alhaj, developed through his participation in our Artistic Development Program, unfolds across a series of distinct spatial conditions. Through light, material, and inscription, the exhibition explores solitude, inward reflection, and slowing down. The group exhibition ‘Archipelago of Whispers’, curated by Deniz Kirkali and Elham Puriya Mehr, explores alternative infrastructures for knowledge-making, such as whispers, gossip, and storytelling. Bringing together video, sound, and multi-channel installations, the exhibition invites visitors into a listening ecology where voices, silences, and stories overlap and take on new meanings. What happens when a sculpture is made to disappear? In this studio visit, artist Mayar Obeido walks through a practice built around intentional change and transformation. His residency at 421 allowed him to develop his current project, which began with soap factories in Aleppo, and grew into a study of artifacts from Palmyra and other sites across Syria. Mayar sculpted the missing piece of an artifact destroyed inside a museum, using clay to imagine what no longer exists. Now he's tracking that same form as it transforms again, this time into soap, drawing a connection between human remains and the objects history has lost. Join us for The Dinner Plate: Paper Pulping with Maha Arafat and Nagham Elbaz! A two-day seminar where paper pulp becomes a vessel for memory and storytelling 🍽️ 📃 Before you make anything, the artists will guide you in choosing a memory, place, or person that will let you tell a story through your dinner set. On Day 1, you'll explore paper pulp and mold it into vessels shaped by that story. Then on Day 2, you'll unmold your dried pieces and add printing, patterning, and texture to deepen the narrative in each object. The session closes with everyone's finished sets arranged together on a shared table. You'll leave with a unique dinner set shaped by a story only you can tell.
