The island’s original name is Ayiti.
The west side, during and after colonization, speaks Creole and French (🇭🇹); the east side speaks Spanish (🇩🇴).
Haiti’s independence in 1804 🇭🇹 was also the Dominican people’s 🇩🇴, because it was for the whole island 🏝️.
The name “Dominican Republic” 🇩🇴 came in 1844.
Dominicans considered themselves Spanish-speaking Haitians until 1821.
When José Núñez de Cáceres declared independence from Spain on December 1, 1821, the new state called itself “Estado Independiente del Haití Español,” or Independent State of Spanish Haiti.
1822 was a reunification, as the world knows, because in 1801 it was already one people under Toussaint and Jean-Jacques Dessalines, not a colonization as DR 🇩🇴 history books say.
Haiti honors the Taínos by keeping the island’s original name.
