7 Habits of Prepared Athletes 1. They arrive early enough to get ready without rushing. 2. They treat every practice rep like it matters in a game. 3. When something goes wrong, they adjust instead of making excuses. 4. They warm up like they’re starting, even when they’re coming off the bench. 5. They pay attention when the coach speaks because they know every instruction matters. 6. They study their opponents instead of waiting until game day to figure them out. 7. They don’t wait until game day to get ready. They build their confidence through preparation all week.

Not every correction is an attack. You can take it personally, or you can use it to get better. You’ve got this…
35
Coach says, “You’re responsible for your own development.” Athlete A hears: Coach doesn’t want to help me get better. Athlete B hears: Coach can help me get better, but I have to do my part.
52
Coach says, “Your teammates are watching you.” Athlete A hears: Everyone is judging everything I do. Athlete B hears: My attitude and actions influence the rest of the team.
32
Coach says, “Shake it off. Next play.” Athlete A hears: Coach doesn’t understand how frustrated I am. Athlete B hears: That play is over. I need to focus on the next one.
38
Coach says, “I expect more from you.” Athlete A hears: Coach is disappointed in me. Athlete B hears: Coach knows I’m capable of more.
31
Coach says, “Come take a seat.” Athlete A hears: Coach doesn’t trust me anymore. Athlete B hears: I don’t know why Coach took me out, but I’ll stay ready for when I go back in.
44
Coach says, “Let’s run that drill again.” Athlete A hears: Coach is punishing us because we messed up. Athlete B hears: Coach wants us to get it right before we need it in a game.

Coach says, “I need you to be more aggressive.” Athlete A hears: Nothing I do is ever good enough. Athlete B hears: I need to stop hesitating when I have a chance to make a play.
33
Coach says, “Be ready. I might need you tonight.” Athlete A hears: I’m probably not going to play again. Athlete B hears: I need to be ready when my opportunity comes. Same statement. Different meanings.

Athlete 101 One of the best skills you can develop is learning how to take coaching. Every correction isn't an attack. It’s an opportunity to improve. Being coachable doesn't mean you're a bad player...it means you're willing to get better.
58
You spend two hours at practice trying to become a better athlete…but then you skip meals??? That makes no sense. “But I got my workout in…what’s the big deal?” The big deal is you’re asking your body to get stronger, run faster, and perform better without giving it what it needs. You’re putting in all that work to improve, then making it harder for your body to keep up. You’re an athlete. Eat like one.

Things To Take From A Bad Game 1. One thing you did well: Don’t let the mistakes erase everything. 2. One mistake you need to understand: What actually caused it? 3. One thing to fix in practice: Turn the mistake into a drill. 4. One thing to do differently next game: Give yourself a specific adjustment. 5. Then let the game go: Learn from it. Don’t keep reliving it.

No matter what grade you’re in…the goal isn’t to panic about the clock. It’s to know what your next move should be. And make it.
38
Seniors If you still want to play in college… you need to be moving now. Follow up. Expand your list if needed. Handle applications, grades, film, and coach communication. Don’t wait for the perfect opportunity to find you.
44
Juniors This is where waiting starts costing you. Know the schools you’re interested in. Know where you fit academically and athletically. Get your film and information in front of coaches. Your name should be reaching inboxes.
44
Sophomores You’re not “just getting started” anymore. Your grades are becoming your transcript. Your game should be moving forward. Start learning what playing at the next level actually requires.
