And Flesh of My Flesh did like 700k first week. X was hotter than Jay in 98 and that’s ok. There’s only like 2,3 rappers all time who ever had a year on par with 98 DMX. And even with all that said, 98 felt like the year Jay firmly established himself as the top rapper in the game with Vol 2. Bc sales weren’t the end all be all to rap fans back then. X would go on a run of 5 straight #1 albums and his albums consistently outperformed Jay’s saleswise. And that was never a point of discussion. Great Depression and Blueprint both dropped fall 01 and X had a bigger first week. And the discussion at that time was not a “X keeps smacking Jay saleswise”. It was “no one in this rap shit is touching Jay right now”. Bc like I said sales weren’t the end all be all to us back then. They’re a huge talking point today but we don’t need to be revisionists and reshape 1998 events to cater to 2026 talking points. X was hotter than Jay but he never took the throne from him.
