๐บ๐ธ The Boatlift That Was Bigger Than Dunkirk
At 10:45 a.m. on September 11, 2001, a Coast Guard lieutenant named Mike Day keyed a radio in New York Harbor and said the only sentence that mattered.
โAll available boats. This is the United States Coast Guard. Anyone wanting to help with the evacuation of Lower Manhattan, report to Governors Island.โ
The boats were already coming.
The bridges were closed. The tunnels were closed. The subways were dead. South of the towers, hundreds of thousands of people had nowhere left to walk. Some jumped into the Hudson. Some stood on seawalls that were never meant to be docks and waited for anything that floated.
Dunkirk took nine days to pull 338,226 Allied soldiers off a beach in 1940.
On 9/11, roughly 800 mariners on about 150 vessels moved as many as 500,000 civilians off Manhattan in about nine hours. Ferries. Tugs. Dinner boats. Pilot boats. Yachts. A retired fireboat. Rubber dinghies that held two people. The largest water evacuation in history.
NY Waterway did not wait for the official call. After the second plane hit, the whole fleet moved. Captain Rick Thornton nosed his ferry against a seawall that was not a slip and started taking people off. Some of them he pulled out of the river. His company alone carried about 158,000 people to Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, Brooklyn, and Queens.
On a normal Tuesday they carried 34,000.
The Staten Island Ferry moved more than 50,000 people and came back the other way with water, bandages, and men who still had work to do in the dust.
The old fireboat John J. Harvey, already retired, tied up near the Museum of Jewish Heritage, took civilians off the seawall, then pumped water when the hydrants downtown died.
Lt. Day later admitted what the day required. โI broke more rules that day than probably Iโve enforced in my whole Coast Guard career.โ
In raw numbers it was bigger than Dunkirk. No boat went down. By nightfall the southern tip of Manhattan had been emptied by people who were not on anyoneโs list of heroes when the morning started.
They were tug captains. Ferry deckhands. Pilots. A lieutenant with a microphone. Ordinary boats answering one sentence.
All available boats.

โWhen you elected me to a seventh term and made me our Commonwealthโs longest serving Senator, you did so trusting that Iโd keep showing up to fight for you every day. And over the past several weeks, Elaine and I have appreciated both your well wishes and your honest questions about what was keeping me away from the Senate.
ย
โYou all know how folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older. Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct โ I canโt help it.
ย
โBut at the same time, Iโve had more than my share of experience with physical vulnerabilities. Surviving childhood polio meant spending my entire life with mobility challenges. They havenโt exactly gotten easier to manage with age. And last month, I took a fall which landed me in the hospital.
ย
โMy doctors have confirmed that I didnโt break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didnโt have a heart attack or a stroke. I donโt have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, Iโve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.
ย
โI can assure you that Iโve been a good patient. At my age, I tend to do what my doctors tell me to do. Iโve submitted to every test they can think of to help figure out what caused this incident. And Iโm continuing to do everything they ask to speed my recovery. In fact, with signs of continued progress, Iโve been able to move from hospital care to a rehabilitation center where Iโll keep regaining my strength.
ย
โAs much as it frustrates me, this process takes time. And on the advice of my doctors, I wonโt be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet. But rest assured that, in the meantime, Iโm not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you. Iโve been working closely with my legislative staff on current issues, and with my Kentucky team who help me provide timely constituent services across our Commonwealth. Iโve also been keeping in touch with my Senate colleagues on the appropriations process, midterm politics, and everything in between.
ย
โYouโre right to expect your representatives to work hard for you. And part of my decision to retire at the end of my termย this comingย January was being honest about theย demands of Senate work.ย But I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf, and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do.
ย
โIโll keep working hard to get back on the Senate floor as soon as possible. And Iโll keep you posted on the progress of my recovery. Until then, Iโm so grateful for your prayers and well wishes.โ

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. We must remember that it did not start from gas chambers.
This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.
Auschwitz took time.

ALT A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.

Adenoviruses used as vectors may persist longer in the body, exposing the immune system to viral components for extended periods.
๐ฆ Adenoviruses are linear double-stranded DNA viruses and remain in an episomal condition in the nucleus. The mechanism of adenovirus vector persistence has not yet been elucidated. But they can persist for a long time in the organism. It is thought that it could be by their integration into the genome or by episomal gene duplication facilitated by the transcription machinery of the host cells. That is, it could happen that it transmits episomes to its cells as occurs in Epstein-Barr virus without lytic phase. During mitosis, EBV episomes are bound to chromosomes in metaphase through EBNA-1, allowing efficient segregation of episomes into daughter cells.
๐ฌ This theoretical phenomenon could predispose certain genetically susceptible individuals to develop chronic autoimmune or inflammatory disorders, as discussed in the context of ASIA syndrome. In contrast, messenger RNA vaccines, by rapidly degrading after inducing the desired immune response, limit this prolonged exposure.
๐โ ๏ธ Regardless of the type of vaccine against COVID-19 or other pathologies, whether messenger RNA or adenoviral vector, there is a theoretical possible risk of developing autoimmune disease only in individuals with certain genetic alleles, such as HLA-DRB1. The key lies in prolonged exposure to viral antigens, which could trigger persistent autoimmune responses.
๐ฌ mRNA vaccines are characterized by rapidly degrading after inducing the desired immune response, thus limiting prolonged exposure to viral components. In contrast, adenoviral vector-based vaccines can persist in the body longer, potentially increasing the risk of a longer-lasting autoimmune reaction in susceptible individuals.
๐ก It is crucial to remember that these risks are rare when compared to the total number of vaccinated individuals and that all vaccines, including adenovirus and messenger RNA vaccines, are critical to combat pandemic diseases such as COVID-19 at the species level. However, understanding these differences may help improve future vaccine design and surveillance for potential adverse effects in these susceptible individuals.
๐ Recall that vaccines save millions of lives and prevent serious consequences of infections in the majority of the population. However, it is crucial to recognize that they may also present risks in some susceptible individuals.
๐งฌ๐ HLA-DRB1 genetic alleles play a crucial role in predisposition to diseases such as Long COVID, myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS) and ASIA syndrome, as well as in post-vaccine syndromes.
๐ These HLA-DRB1 alleles are part of the HLA (human leukocyte antigen) system, which regulates how the immune system recognizes and responds to foreign antigens, such as viruses and vaccine components. In individuals with certain HLA-DRB1 alleles, the immune system may trigger excessive or inappropriate responses to these antigens, leading to autoimmune conditions and inflammatory syndromes.
๐ฆ This explains why some patients, after significant viral infection or vaccination, may develop persistent autoimmune reactions. In the case of Long COVID and ME/CFS, persistence of viral antigens could trigger an autoimmune response against self tissues, including the pituitary gland.
๐โจ In a ๐ค๐๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ, patients who developed hypophysitis after infection with the first SARS-CoV recovered their health months after treatment with replacement corticosteroids. This finding underscores the importance of detecting hypophysitis early to prevent permanent damage.โก๏ธ ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articleโฆ
๐ง Hypophysitis can cause a decrease in ACTH production, crucial for adrenal function and immune response. Controlling ACTH levels is critical if symptoms such as chronic fatigue, orthostatic hypotension and sleep disturbances are present after a viral infection.
๐ Early administration of replacement corticosteroids can stop ACTH secretion and prevent autoimmunity against this hormone, thus protecting the pituitary from further damage. Over time, as hypophysitis and viral infection subside, the dose of replacement corticosteroids can be gradually reduced until normal pituitary function is restored.
๐Challenges in HPA Axis Evaluation in Patients with Long COVID, ME/CFS and Post-Vaccine Syndromes.
Studies are often limited to single morning cortisol measurements, ignoring diurnal variability and cortisol response to physical/mental stress, which may underestimate problems in the HPA axis. In addition, CRH or ACTH stimulation tests, crucial for assessing pituitary and adrenal function, are not frequently performed.
It is crucial to detect HPA axis dysfunctions as early as possible to prevent adrenal atrophy due to low ACTH levels. Newly diagnosed patients may recover HPA axis function if autoimmune or direct damage by infection to the pituitary is detected early. Conversely, as time passes, the risk of pituitary damage from autoimmunity against ACTH increases, leading to further adrenal atrophy and the need for hydrocortisone replacement therapy. Early detection and treatment of these dysfunctions is crucial to improve the clinical management and quality of life of these patients.
