Access to affordable, reliable & sustainable energy is vital for Africa’s just green transition.
Our ED Patricia Mbogo joined @cnbcafrica to unpack the state of #EnergyAccess and why inclusive policies are key to unlocking progress.

In 2000, Cambodia and Kenya both had electricity for roughly one in six people. By 2024, Cambodia was at 99%, Kenya at 77%.

In Bangkok we asked @WorldBank to ring-fence at least 15% of #Mission300 finance for fragile and conflict-affected settings, mainly as grants, not loans to governments already in debt. CSOs from Africa and Asia backed the call.

Bangkok in brief: we took our five asks into the room, Mission 300 should be judged on speed (agreed, with at least 15% for fragile settings), and the Bank will judge projects by jobs and income.

"Mission 300 is the World Bank's biggest promise to Africa." Our Wentland Muhatiah in @bigshiftglobal's wrap of the Bangkok meetings: publish the spending, track clean cooking, ring-fence 15% for fragile states.

Poles make up about a third of the cost of bringing the grid to the last mile. Very few of them are made in Africa.
In his new blog from the WBG and IMF Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Wentland Muhatiah sets out what ACCESS heard over the week, and how far our five asks for Mission 300 moved.
The question for Mission 300 has never only been how many people it connects. It is also who builds it, who can afford what it delivers, and who gets counted along the way.
By the next time the World Bank and its partners report on Mission 300, we want to know four things:
1. Has the tracker shown where the money comes from, and how much of it is new?
2. Has the pace of electrification really picked up, country by country?
3. Have fragile and conflict-affected states received their fair share?
4. Can the families connected this year still afford their power next year?

Judge Mission 300 on speed? Agreed, @WorldBank. Don’t let the fast lane bypass fragile states: ring-fence at least 15% of #Mission300 finance for fragile and conflict-affected settings, mainly as grants. @bigshiftglobal

New op-ed!
Energy transition advocates count megawatts; just transition advocates ask who gets power and who pays. Our Senior Advocacy and Policy Research Officer, Wentland Muhatiah, argues both camps need one set of books, and sets out five practical steps for the @WorldBankGroup and #Mission300 to make energy justice follow the money.

Finance ministers are in Bangkok to talk jobs. For 563 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa, there's no power to work with.
Our new blog sets out five tests #Mission300 must pass to turn connections into jobs.

#Mission300 is the right ambition. To deliver it, civil society should be a partner, not an audience. Communities know where the need is and who is still waiting for power.

At the #WBGMeetings CSO Town Hall, @WorldBank’s @bjerde_anna said civil society can be “the best available method” for its knowledge, reach & community trust.
We welcome this. ACCESS calls for civil society to have a formal, & permanent seat in #Mission300 delivery & monitoring.

We agree. For millions still waiting for power, every delay costs jobs, livelihoods and dignity. #Mission300 must be delivered on time.
