Did you know? Glasgow awarded Nelson Mandela the Freedom of the City in 1981 while he was imprisoned under apartheid. Today, that legacy of solidarity reminds us that human rights transcend nationality. S.A must stand against xenophobia. #MandelaLegacy #InternationalSolidarity

"South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white". The Freedom Charter was based on thousands of comments and opinions gathered from across South Africa. The 1996 constitution of the new free South Africa was largely based on the Charter and its human rights for all.
The Freedom Charter was adopted on this day in 1955, by the Congress of the People at a gathering in Kliptown, near Johannesburg. The Congress of the People was a multi-racial convention organized by the Congress Alliance. Image Source: Drum Archive

In 1962, the students at the University of Glasgow elected Inkosi Albert Luthuli as the Rector of the University of Glasgow. Luthuli had just received the 1960 Nobel Peace Prize. The campaign was driven by the Liberal and Labour student clubs (which notably included future First Minister Donald Dewar). Luthuli decisively defeated other prominent candidates, including future British Prime Minister Edward Heath. Because the South African government confined Luthuli to his home area in Groutville and refused to issue him a passport, he was physically unable to be installed or fulfill his duties in Glasgow. To honour him and compensate for his forced absence, the Student Representative Council (SRC) established the Luthuli Scholarship Fund. This initiative allowed Black South African students who were disadvantaged by apartheid to study at the University of Glasgow. Source: ThoughtCo, Wikipedia, SAHO. Photo Credit: Terence Spencer

On 11 February, we remember the release of Nelson Mandela. A moment that marked the end of one long injustice and the beginning of a nation’s reckoning with freedom, dignity, and responsibility. This year also marks 27 years of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. 27 years of carrying Madiba’s legacy forward, protecting his values, and advancing social justice in a democratic South Africa. From 27 years behind bars to 27 years of legacy in action, the work of freedom continues. #OnThisDay #MandelaLegacy #FreedomAndJustice #27Years

Our statue in Mandela Place, Glasgow, where we celebrated that night in 1990, will serve to honour his memory and his lessons for all who value social and racial justice. Material is now used in schools, and much more will be linked to the statue itself. bit.ly/NMSMFdon
36 years ago today, Nelson Mandela walked into freedom. We commemorate this day not just as history, but as a call to action. It is up to us to protect the rights he fought for and create a brighter legacy for the future. It starts with you & I.#StandUp4HumanRights #VisitConHill
