Most people refer to remission as no longer qualifying for a BPD diagnosis. I prefer the term functional recovery. I take it to mean someone who is continuously maintaining their wellbeing in multiple aspects (physical, mental, etc), functioning in multiple aspects of their life (relationships, interests, navigating challenges etc), feel life is worth living, and no longer exhibiting destructive “BPD behaviors” as much as they are exhibiting new, more effective ways of living.

One notable thing to me about the BPD discourse I’ve been seeing here over the last couple of days, vast majority of it from non-clinicians, there is just no tiptoeing around BPD as a diagnosis, no the-diagnosis-that-must-not-be-named vibes; it is refreshing in its own way, a collective step away from toxic denial that has often characterized activism around this. I don’t know what the future holds for BPD as a diagnosis; quite possibly the terminology will look different in 2 decades, but the experiential and behavioral patterns that are indexed by BPD need clear-eyed recognition, and that need will not change.

Answer from Grok: “Kierkegaard would not dismiss either thinker (Bion and Lacan) out of hand, but he would press the same question he presses against the poet: does this framework ultimately serve the existing individual who must choose and become, or does it offer a sophisticated, endlessly interesting way of remaining in reflection, openness, or structural lack? Where Bion and Lacan stay at the level of psychic process, theoretical elegance, or cultivated tolerance of the unknown, the criticism lands. Where their work forces a change in how a person actually lives and decides, it begins to move beyond the purely aesthetic.”

Answer from Chat GPT: “Bion asks how the unbearable can be received and transformed so that thought and meaning become possible. Kierkegaard asks how the individual can sustain faith when the paradox cannot be reconciled through universal reason. Lacan asks how a subject achieves consistency despite an irreducible impasse in the structure of experience. These are not identical problems, but they converge around a question: What sustains psychic life when understanding cannot provide a complete solution? For Bion, faith sustains the capacity to think. For Kierkegaard, faith sustains Abraham's relation to the absolute. For Lacan, the sinthome can sustain the subject where symbolic resolution fails. The sinthome shifts the emphasis from discovering the meaning of an experience to finding a singular way to live with what cannot be fully made meaningful.”

My concern is how unreflectively "pro-meaning" (post-behaviourist) psychology has become. (Not to be a behaviourist...) But: i) "meaning" itself has different meanings, ii) more needn't mean better, iii) some "meaning" talk is simply gibberish. i) Word meaning (semantic meaning),

Keith Jarrett’s solo performance of “Over the Rainbow” in Tokyo in 1984 is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding and moving piano solo covers of all time. Rather than simply restating the familiar melody, the legendary pianist infused the piece with new life through his brilliant improvisation, refined harmonic structure, and profound emotional depth.
