Rhode Island Lt. Gov. Sabina Matos just demonstrated why energy policy debates feel so broken. She couldn’t distinguish natural gas from gasoline at the pump, then blamed rising prices on “Donald Trump’s war.” When shown that domestic natural gas has barely moved—from about $3 to $3.10 per decatherm at a PP&L plant supplied by the Marcellus Shale. That’s the problem. We have abundant, affordable domestic natural gas within a few hundred miles. Politics and pre-scripted talking points keep it from reaching New England. Leaders who don’t grasp the basics can’t fix the problem. Watch the exchange. Then ask yourself if this is the depth of understanding we need on energy.
