The FDA has cleared the first blood test for Alzheimer’s for use in primary care settings specifically to rule out the presence of amyloid, a hallmark of the disease. “This is another important step toward expanding access to Alzheimer’s disease diagnostic tools,” said our president and chief executive officer @joannepikedrph. The blood test is intended to help primary care physicians determine which patients do not require Alzheimer’s-related follow-up tests, such as PET scans or cerebrospinal fluid analysis. This can significantly improve the diagnostic process by preventing unnecessary specialized testing for individuals whose cognitive issues stem from non-Alzheimer’s causes. The Association is committed to ensuring blood tests are used appropriately and effectively across all care settings. Read our full statement: bit.ly/4oh3Tiu.

The FDA has cleared the first blood test to aid in diagnosing Alzheimer's. While there is still no stand-alone test to diagnose Alzheimer’s today, this FDA action marks an important step toward people obtaining an accurate diagnosis more quickly and earlier in the disease process, which is important now that there are treatments for early Alzheimer's. bit.ly/4dlIlwY

The FDA has cleared the first blood test to aid in diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. The test detects amyloid plaques, a hallmark of the disease, through a blood draw. “Today marks another important step in Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis,” said @DrMariaALZ. “With today’s action by the FDA we are hopeful it will be easier for more individuals to receive an accurate diagnosis earlier.” While there is no single, stand-alone test to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease today — including this newly approved test — blood testing can be an important piece of the diagnostic process. The Association is leading the development of clinical practice guidelines for the use of blood biomarker tests in specialty care settings, which will be debuted this summer at the #AAIC25, July 27-31 in Toronto and online.
