I’m worried about our beach promenade in Durban. That stretch has so much untapped potential, yet we’ve watched many of the restaurants shut down and relocate to Umhlanga. The location is to die for. Imagine a vibrant promenade where you could restaurant-hop within walking distance, moving from one unique culinary experience to another, stopping for exceptional coffee, and ending the day with cocktails overlooking the ocean. Durban has the coastline, the weather and the setting. What seems to be missing is a deliberate strategy to turn the promenade into a thriving culinary and lifestyle destination. The potential is enormous. We also have what we used to call “ Moyo Pier” , a restaurant right on the beach , but now a white elephant.. Back in the day, we used to host the likes of Top Billing, and the promenade was also a stage for a number of fashion shows and high-profile events. December, in particular, was abuzz with activity. What are we doing wrong? If this was in CPT or Joburg, they would be milking it.
