How to Survive Living Next to Rome , by @ajkeen keenon.substack.com/p/how-to… “Nobody in the United States wants to call it that. But I write history, and I know what a coup d’état looks like.” @JohnRalstonSaul As the leaves turn, it’s becoming Canada week. Yesterday we had the Newfoundland-based Paris Marx offering an incisive critique of American Big Tech. Today, it’s my old Canadian friend, John Ralston Saul — novelist, essayist, former president of PEN International — speaking to us from the top floor of his house in an autumnal Toronto. Like another frequent Canadian guest, Stephen Marche, Saul offers a sharp critique of the United States which, he reminds us, is a geographically smaller country than Canada. Not that size matters, of course. Saul thinks of America as Rome. Canada’s great achievement, he says, is surviving as Rome’s neighbor for over two hundred years. In contrast with Chile, Mexico or Guatemala, Canada hasn’t been invaded or subverted by its clumsy imperial neighbor. When America sneezes, the rest of the continent gets pneumonia. Except Canada. Even in autumn. Is Trump an aberration? Not according to Saul who offers Grover Cleveland as the 19th century DJT. Like Stephen Marche, Saul thinks there will be a civil war in the United States within twenty-five years. But he doubts it will be a repeat of the 19th century Civil War of Shermanesque armies against armies. More likely a continuing breakdown of the legal system, and of the willingness of individuals, states and the federal government to obey the law. More like the chaos of Caligula than Caesar vs Pompey. On the tariffs Saul is cheerful. Canada sent half its goods south before the 1988 free trade deal and three quarters after it, he reminds us. So Trump’s tariffs have frightened the Canadian provinces into dismantling the trade barriers they kept against each other. Duh. “We thank him for his stupidity,” Saul says of Grover Trump. John Ralston Saul once wrote a book about Canada entitled A Fair Country. So I suggest a book about America should be called An Unfair Country. He laughs. He’d call it The Great Drama. With perhaps the subtitle: Not As Big As Canada.

As Colonel-in-Chief of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry I’m deeply saddened and concerned to hear the news coming from Wainwright. My thoughts and prayers are with all the soldiers, their families and friends.

So wonderful to see these Indigenous Elders who are old friends and have played such an important role in changing public policy by reinserting the Indigenous presence. We all owe them a great deal. @UCalgary @UCalgaryEduc

Gloria Steinem, with all her vitality, energy and purpose, has left us. I will never forget that she was the one that we all looked up to. Her hilarious article as a Playboy Bunny will never be forgotten!

Like most Torontonians, I am thrilled that there will not be an expansion to the BBishop runway after the many $$ spent on the waterfront to make it a happy and liveable place, drawing thousands of people to live and play there. This decision is a good and considerate one!
Replying to @GraphicMatt
Mayor Olivia Chow's motion to demand Doug Ford give the city back the land the province took for island airport expansion CARRIES 25-1.

Check out this Substack on soccer of which I have become an enduring fan!
Here is a good interpretation of the France-Spain game by Thomas Debost – new to Substack and a burgeoning sports commentator who knows Europe and North America well. You’ll enjoy his observations. open.substack.com/pub/thomas…

Canada’s healthcare crisis isn’t about shortage, it’s about barriers. While ERs close and wait times grow, thousands of internationally trained doctors, nurses, and lab techs are ready to help, but are locked out by red tape. 🔗 Read more: lnkd.in/gVCjW-cN

The Life Research Institute at the University of Ottawa is launching an innovative project to enhance the quality of life and optimize the wellbeing of solo retirees.  A solo retiree is someone who has never married/partnered, is separated, divorced, or widowed, or is currently living apart from a partner and has retired from full-time employment or is nearing retirement. The first step is a national, bilingual study that will collect data from October 1, 2025, to November 15, 2025, followed by the release of findings and evidence-based resources. The Team would like to invite solo retirees to participate in this exciting research by completing an online survey. The survey is available in English and French. uwaterloo.ca1.qualtrics.com/… @fedretirees
