New Chief Exec of Hong Kong SAR, John Lee, the only candidate, was rubber stamped by 1,416 residents selected by a Cttee of 7, chaired by..John Lee. Far from making progress on Article 45 HK Basic Law (selection ‘by universal suffrage’) this is a great leap backwards

Something very odd indeed is happening in Shanghai, city where we lived for 4 years and our younger son was born. Could it be the moment when the CCP realises that Zero Covid is neither achievable nor desirable?
Residents in #Shanghai screaming from high rise apartments after 7 straight days of the city lockdown. The narrator worries that there will be major problems. (in Shanghainese dialect—he predicts people can’t hold out much longer—he implies tragedy).
Locking down the whole of Shanghai and other major cities in China, while the rest of the world gets on with living with COVID, is a call by the CCP. But the immediate global impact was an assumption of less energy demand, with energy prices dropping. We should be grateful
We all send our condolences to the crew and passengers of MU 5735 and all their families and friends.
China's reaction to Russia's invasion, against a backdrop of strong international condemnation and her own need to comply with sanctions against Russia, may be a crucial turning point. The wheels are in motion.

Global Britain needs a wide range of relationships with different countries. Our shared values have led @WFD_Democracy to scope a new programme with @TFDemocracy. While strengthening business & dialogue with Taiwan we should not look to change the formal diplomatic relationship.
Also meeting MPs @DehennaDavison & @Ben_Everitt with plans to discuss regional job creation data from UK exports #GlobalBritain #IndoPacificTilt
First day of our new Co-ordinator Louisa Idel here discussing export growth opportunities with Chair @RichardGrahamUK, @ChinaBritain Business Council Chief Exec Andrew Seaton & Shadow Business Secretary @jreynoldsMP.
Happy Chinese New Year from everyone at the All Party Parliamentary China Group!
The tiger symbolises energy, ambition and courage, and the APPCG will aim to bring these qualities to its work in the year ahead. #CNY2022 #GlobalBritain
HK’s legal system has been the subject of much criticism over the last two years. But this verdict from the Court of Final Appeal (CFA) on riot prosecutions shows that the independent rule of law is still very much alive and kicking in the HK SAR
