On this day in 1943, Jewish prisoners at the Nazi extermination camp of Sobibor, in occupied Poland, launched one of the most remarkable acts of resistance during the Holocaust. Led by Alexander Pechersky and Leon Feldhendler, prisoners organised a daring uprising, killing several SS officers and attempting a mass escape. Around 300 prisoners managed to break out of the camp, although many were subsequently captured or killed. Approximately 50 escapees survived the war. Following the uprising, the Nazis dismantled Sobibor and attempted to erase all traces of their crimes. By then, approximately 170,000 Jews had been murdered at the camp. Today, we honour the extraordinary courage of those who resisted their persecutors, remember the victims murdered at Sobibor and reaffirm our commitment to preserving their memory. Their resistance stands as an enduring testament to human courage and the determination to fight for freedom, even in the darkest circumstances.
