If Lula wins, it will be because the prospect of a Bolsonaro return shook the complacency and misgivings out of a national coalition that failed to take Flávio seriously as a challenger. The far-right is an indisputable force, but the premature PT obits will need to be shredded.

It was the turnout, stupid. 3 million more people voted in 2nd round than 1st. Only 3.2% of all voters spoiled their ballots, lowest percentage in a 2nd round this century Source: @folha

Arriving back in Europe to Lula having beaten Flavio Bolsonaro, keeping his golpista family out of power once more Lots of challenges await Lula’s new term, from rising debt to legislature’s right turn, but a crisis seems to have been averted for now

Lula finding a successor to lead PT is now no longer a good idea but a necessity. He’s old, term limited, and as incredible of a political figure as he is he also comes with baggage I wonder who can hold together the PT’s wide coalition *and* win over the liberals needed to win

Brazil: despite its ruling that voting should be extended by 2 hours the Supreme Court says that voting machines that were sealed cannot be reopened. The only thing that's clear is that whichever side is declared the loser is not going to accept easily the result.

To give you a small idea of the chaos: At São Paulo’s biggest voting station (PUC), some voting machines were closed for the night, while some still open. If you were assigned a closed machine, you cannot vote. That’s in SÃO PAULO. Expect massive legal challenges nationwide. Nobody knows what happens next

Can we please stop this nonsense already? This is absolutely sickening. Yes, only a minority of Arday's scholarship looks outright fraudulent and needs to be retracted. And I understand why lefty anti-racism activists may still mistake that for vindication. But academics who still defend Arday--after all the blatant lies available to anyone who wants to see them--are doing much more harm to higher ed than the man himself ever did.

I've long thought the concept of "élites emergentes" from Guatemala was especially useful for understanding how power works in Latin America. Organized crime is one source of the emerging elite regionwide, in Mexico forming a remarkably stable caste of dominant crime families.

Maybe this turns into something but usually “arise, arise and rebel!” messaging aimed at military-political elites in Cuba hasn’t gone anywhere. In that context reads more as a low cost gamble than anything else
To those who seek to create positive change in Cuba - now is the time. The disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few; seize this opportunity to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA.

This messaging was all over the place in 2021 too, or in Venezuela in 2024; didn’t really lead to anything At most it creates a permission structure of “remember you can work with us”, like what happened in Chile in ‘73, but I don’t think Cuban pols & generals need reminder
