CONFUSED ABOUT ATF’S MISSION? LET ME BE CLEAR.
We go after straw purchasers who lie to put firearms in prohibited hands. We go after traffickers who supply violent criminals. And we go after criminals who misuse firearms.
Law-abiding Americans exercising their Second Amendment rights are not the target.
As ATF Director, that is my focus. My team is delivering: firearms trafficking charges referred for prosecution are up 33% year over year.
We investigate. Prosecutors make charging decisions. Courts decide the cases. That’s how the system is supposed to work.

▶️NIBIN Win: In June 2024, a Florida drive by killed a mother and her 4 year old. A tip identified the shooter. One month later in Georgia, that same suspect crashed during a chase and ran into the woods, dropping a bookbag. Atlanta ATF K-9s found the bag, with his ID and two guns inside, one with a machinegun conversion device. His DNA was on both guns. NIBIN showed that one of those guns was used in an Atlanta shooting two weeks earlier. He was arrested, pled guilty, and was sentenced in August to 25 months. The Florida murder case is still pending trial.

The Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) is a permanent, interagency law enforcement task force created by executive order to end the presence of criminal cartels, foreign gangs, and transnational criminal organizations throughout the United States, dismantle cross-border human smuggling and trafficking networks, end the scourge of human smuggling and trafficking, with a particular focus on such offenses involving children — across all 52 U.S. states and territories.
