Lea Salim Hammoud joined AUB this fall, continuing a family connection to the university that spans three generations. Her paternal grandfather, Samir Hammoud (MBA ’81), built a distinguished career spanning banking, financial regulation, academia, and economic advisory. After decades in the banking sector, he served as chairman of the Banking Control Commission of Lebanon from 2015 to 2020. He also shared his experience in the classroom, teaching at AUB and other universities for 14 years, and has remained active in several professional and community organizations. Lea’s father, Salim Hammoud (BS Biology ’95), built an international career in healthcare technology and medical devices. Based in Dubai, he currently serves as regional director MEA and general manager, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, at Omnicell, following senior leadership roles across the Middle East and North Africa. Both generations have also maintained their connection to AUB as donors. Today, Lea carries that legacy forward as she begins her own AUB journey. Welcome to AUB, Lea!

Established in 1874, AUB’s Lee Observatory was the first and oldest astronomical observatory in the modern Middle East, beginning a remarkable legacy of observation, scientific inquiry, and discovery at the university. More than 150 years later, that legacy is being reimagined through AUB’s new School of Computing and Data Sciences, which will become, in the words of AUB President Fadlo Khuri, “a new observatory for our age,” this time turning its lens toward data, complex patterns, and new frontiers of knowledge. Swipe through the gallery to learn more about the history of this legacy. Photos courtesy of Jafet Library Archives, American University of Beirut. #AUBProud #AUBAlumni @AUBLibraries
