Arsenal out, City or Brighton out, Liverpool or Chelsea out. Fleetwood or Bradford in a quarter-final. All set up perfectly for Everton to fold tamely on Thursday. Never more certain of anything in my life.

So why does the new Dune trailer reveal that Villeneuve has totally screwed the pooch? Jessica and Chani in the books (Dune, Children of Dune, and Dune Messiah) support the thematic weight of the story because of their loyalty to Paul, and they exercise a tremendous amount of agency and subtlety while negotiating the constraints that they have chosen for their lives (both chose to help put Paul in power, and both chose to be concubines when "wife" was politically impossible). Their character journeys already carry with them the implicit critique of power as a cage. Turning Chani into a conspirator in the assassination plot doesn't just undermine this, it actually breaks the world AND the themes, as Paul would have no choice in such a situation but to kill her because Paul is also imprisoned by his power. Villeneuve, in his attempt to bring the books' critique of power to the foreground, has completely undermined the world he's spent hundreds of millions of dollars and nearly a decade constructing. It's foolish, wasteful, and a very good example of a creator failing to understand the material he's working with on a very fundamental level. It's also worth noting that in Herbert's universe, women are NOT the moral guardians. They are just as corrupt and corruptible as the men (and far more powerful than all of the men excepting sometimes Paul and always Leto II).

What in the ever loving fuck is this brainless tripe? I'm now REALLY glad I decided to wait on wasting my time on these films until the final installment came out. Forget "deviation from the source material," this is cutting the heart out of the source material and then raping the hole in its chest. Sorry, Denis, but "preaching a one note message that the book contained" does not amount to "presenting the themes of the orignal story." Holy fucking shit. Gonna have to re-read the books now just to get that stupid trailer out of my head.

As indicated by the end of Part 2, DV's Dune has gone completely off the source material rails. I'm still going to see this, but my expectations are extremely low. Centering Chani is disappointing enough, but putting her in opposition to Paul is unforgivable.

The trailers are convincing me that the third Dune movie is just a totally new story on Dune that has nothing to do with the books

The Trump corruption issue is like the Biden cognitive decline issue in one key sense: Everyone around the president or even supporting him professionally from afar should be asked about it, and their lies/claims of ignorance should be hung around their necks like dumbbells.

Terrific comedian wholly out of his depth. I remember when he took on charter schools and was spectacularly wrong and ill-informed. When someone screws up a topic you know well, you assume--or should--that they're equally wrong about subjects you don't know.
HBO's @LastWeekTonight has a long track record of citing social science findings without the appropriate context, massaging them to support whatever point @iamjohnoliver is trying to make.

Will I disavow the Dreadnoks? Sure. Yeah. Absolutely. They smell like bayou patchouli and generational failure. I’d carpet bomb the Everglades if I thought it would eradicate them forever. Next question?
