In 1902, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, after her husband was gored by a bull elk, Scottish immigrant Elspeth MacLeod took his Sharps rifle and hunted to pay the doctor. She’d never fired it before. Her neighbor, a Shoshone elder named Washakie, taught her to track in snow and to wait for the heart-lung shot. All winter she left her 3 children with Washakie’s wife and went into the Tetons alone. She brought back 2 elk. She sold the meat, kept the hides, and gave both ivory teeth to Dr. Nelson. He hung them on his watch chain and forgave the rest of the debt. He said: “You paid in courage. That’s rare currency.” Elspeth later outfitted dudes as the valley’s first female guide. Her daughter wrote: “Mother said the mountains tried to widow her. She widowed them instead.”
