#AfricanEnergyUpdate | Senegal Advances National Energy Efficiency Strategy with AFREC Support Senegal has drafted a National Energy Efficiency Strategy and Action Plan with @AU_AFREC support and EU-funded CEPA technical help, plus building-performance guidelines and minimum energy standards. AEME presented the package in Dakar on 10 September to about 60 officials, firms and lenders. The country is one of four first-phase pilots with Burundi, Madagascar and Zimbabwe. AEME says modelling points to 70% higher energy productivity by 2050 and 100% by 2063, with 26 actions put at 29,109 GWh of savings over 2026–2035.

#AfricanEnergyUpdate | AFREC Advances Stronger Methane Action Across Africa’s Oil & Gas Sector The @AU_AFREC of the African Union convened a validation workshop in Algiers to review its policy paper “Accelerating Methane Action in Africa: A Comparative Analysis of Methane Emissions Regulations in Africa’s Oil and Gas Sector.” AFREC Executive Director Rashid Ali Abdallah emphasised that reducing methane emissions is both an environmental imperative and an economic opportunity — recovering valuable natural gas currently lost to leaks, flaring and venting, improving operational efficiency, strengthening energy security and generating additional revenues for sustainable development. The paper proposes the Africa Methane Regulatory Readiness Index (AMRRI) and a practical framework centred on four pillars: Measurement, Reporting & Verification (MRV); Mitigation Controls (including LDAR, flaring and venting management); Institutional and Enforcement Systems; and Infrastructure and Market Enablement. The validation marks a key step toward evidence-based methane policies that support a just energy transition while minimising energy waste and responsibly harnessing Africa’s resources.
