The @UN Security Council condemns continued escalatory Houthi attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian aviation and energy infrastructure.
The Council reaffirms Saudi Arabia's inherent right of self-defence in accordance with international law.

By this logic, Britain should have surrendered to Nazi Germany during the Blitz because fighting back threatened London's economy and civilian lives. Britain endured devastating bombing without accepting that resistance was the cause of instability.
Saudi Arabia now faces a different but comparable dilemma: should Houthi attacks on civilians force Riyadh into submission because retaliation carries economic costs? A peace built on fear of the aggressor is not lasting security. The real question is how to defeat coercion, not how to accommodate it.
The Houthi attack on Riyadh airport today - with at least 12 killed including an American and hundreds injured - has significantly raised the stakes of the conflict. It is too soon to tell precisely what the consequences will be, but it seems likely the attack will widen the war at least in the short term: deepening Saudi resolve to impose serious military costs on the Houthis and potentially drawing in at least limited US intervention.
But the Houthi attacks are also a harsh reminder to Riyadh of how the Yemen war undermines other Saudi priorities: the Houthis have cut off the main artery of travel to Saudi Arabia just weeks before one of the flagship conferences in the kingdom. However, this phase of the Yemen war is different than the pre-2022 truce phase. Since 2023, the Houthis have demonstrated a sustained intent & capability to constrain maritime traffic through the Red Sea. Houthi control over the Red Sea would jeopardize Saudi Arabia's economic development for decades to come, making it harder for Riyadh to strike a durable deal with the Houthis. If Riyadh truly believes the latest Yemen government offensive can deliver a decisive military defeat against the Houthis (despite mixed results at least initially), Saudi leaders could decide the costs of the war are worth it in the long term.
None of this bodes well for the stability of the region.

When you feel overwhelmed by the bad news around the world, cheer yourself up by remembering that one of the worst dictatorships in human history is gone. Since Assad's fall, 1.6 million refugees & 1.9 million internally displaced Syrians were able to return to their homes.
#Syria: today 120 displaced families left the camps and returned to N. Latakia, N. Hama & S. Idlib countryside.
They were accompanied by the Civil Defense, UNHCR & The Red Crescent, with relief packages provided.
This is part of the plan to gradually close all IDP camps.

Today I had the pleasure of receiving a courtesy call from Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker, @HouseofCommons , United Kingdom during his official visit to Malaysia. We had a very fruitful discussion on key areas of parliamentary reform including the role of select committees and their support systems in enhancing parliamentary functions. The discussion also touches on the the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, the impact of Private Members’ Bills and the evolving challenges of online safety.
I also took the opportunity to update the UK delegation on the various significant reforms that Malaysia has implemented which includes amongst others the Online Safety Act 2024 and the amendments to the penal code in an effort to ensure safer online environment for Malaysian.
It is my fervent hope that this will enhance and stregthen the bilateral relations between Malaysia and the United Kingdom.

As Syria transitions, all the warnings add little: They are well-known, to the concerned above all. Let us give Syrians time and trust. They need and deserve as much.
And let us discuss the reasons to hope. Synaps, whose team worked across Syria over the years, can name a few 🧵

My heart and thoughts are with the Syrian people on this historic day. Your freedom was hard earned. Your sacrifices have not gone in vain. Freedom and dignity are what you deserve. May you have them forever and may generations see free Syria thrive. Long live free Syria!
I was living in Damascus when the #syria revolution began. I worked on Syria from Istanbul 2015-2018.The brutality Assad inflicted on Syria is unfathomable. Since I left the region it’s been too painful to think about. Today seeing prisoners freed in Hama my heart is overflowing
