Earlier this month, the median liquid private credit fund (listed BDC) traded down to a -20% discount to NAV. This dynamic has only happened four other times over the past twenty years: Oct 2008, Aug 2011, Jan 2016, and Mar 2020. Historically, after reaching a -20% median NAV discount, private credit has produced a 1-year return of 40.0%, along with 3 and 5-year returns of 16.8% and 14.7% annualized, on average.

.@JulianKlymochko of @AccelerateFT in Calgary writes that although Canada has the “Maple 8″ – the country’s eight largest pension plans, which control more than $2-trillion of capital – only one, the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, has an explicit mandate to invest in the local economy. If the Maple 8 allocated just 0.05% a year of their $2-trillion in assets under management to domestic investment, $1-billion would fund Canadian innovation each year. Assuming a $1-million investment into each high-potential domestic startup would mean the establishment of 1,000 highly innovative new Canadian ventures annually.
