Mayor Harvie has been emphatic about the fact that he and the community just want something done. No unnecessary delays or political games.
Delta deserves a crossing that is safe, cost effective and delivered on time.
Mayor Harvie was a team player putting Delta’s interest forward in an environment requiring the ability to work through complex issues with other mayors.
Recent narratives attempting to mischaracterize municipal decisions from nearly eight years ago are a distraction from the real issue. Our community is stuck in gridlock while senior levels of government stall.
It is time to establish the facts clearly:
The Bridge Was Cancelled Provincially in 2017:
The previous 10-lane bridge project was cancelled entirely by the provincial government prior to Mayor Harvie taking office.
Municipalities Hold No Jurisdiction Over Provincial Projects:
Local mayors and councils possess zero administrative or operational control over provincial infrastructure delivery, procurement strategies, or construction timelines.
The Tunnel Was a Consensus-Driven Mandate:
Following the province's cancellation of the bridge, more than 40 regional mayors voted collectively to endorse an 8-lane tunnel option, after being given little choice. This unified regional stance was taken specifically to break a severe political stalemate and get a stalled, critical safety corridor moving.
Delta residents deserve leadership defined by truth, accountability, and immediate results - not political revisionism and more delays.
The role of municipal leadership is to advocate fiercely for our community.
Attempting to shift accountability onto local leadership to deflect from provincial procurement delays and escalating project costs is unacceptable.

Mayor Harvie and the Achieving for Delta team want to congratulate CBSA officers on their historic opium seizure at Delta Port this year.
But it also underscores a serious reality: our ports continue to be a major entry and exit point for illegal drugs and weapons.
For years, Mayor Harvie has been advocating for stronger port security.
As we move ahead with significant port expansion, we must match that growth with modern, effective enforcement. Crime today is more sophisticated - and our response must be equally advanced.
Protecting our communities and securing our ports must go hand in hand.
