Against the backdrop of Japan having its first-ever female prime minister and her high approval ratings, the election resulted in a landslide victory for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which secured 316 out of 465 seats on its own. Together with its coalition partner, the Ishin, the ruling coalition went on to control approximately 76% of the seats in the lower house. Over the following nine months, legislation such as the Act Establishing the National Intelligence Council and the criminalization of desecrating the Japanese national flag was passed, with the government's agenda increasingly focusing on state intelligence and nationalist policies rather than the issues that directly affect people's everyday lives.
