Gimme three months and his golf buddies in Florida wouldn’t even vote for him. I’ll smoke him by 7. Bet on it.

The tweet said 75% of people. Not 75% of the states.
27 out of 50. so 54% of states, not 75% of states.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The quoted claim refers to Americans by population share (not states). Democratic governors now hold ~28 states home to ~74% of the population after flips in large states like TX/GA/OH. stateline.org/2026/11/04/dem… chicagotribune.com/2026/11/04/dem… x.com/SteveRattner/s…

If you’re on the right, looking at tonight’s election results, you might be tempted to start pointing fingers. Maybe you blame Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, MTG, Joe Kent, Matt Walsh, or Thomas Massie. But I think those answers are wrong. The buck stops with Trump. People were upset about how he handled the Epstein files. He dismissed their concerns and told them to move on. People were upset about ICE arresting people at workplaces, in their cars, at schools, and in courthouses. They watched citizens and otherwise productive members of society get caught up in enforcement actions rather than seeing the administration focus on violent criminals and those with serious criminal records. People were upset that the wars in Ukraine and Gaza continued despite Trump’s promises to bring peace. People were upset that he did virtually nothing to address the national debt crisis. Instead, he added to it. People were upset that he sent Pete Hegseth to Kentucky to campaign against Thomas Massie, one of the few Republicans consistently willing to challenge his own party on spending and constitutional principles. And despite all of that, I think Trump still could have weathered the criticism. He could have focused on the American economy. Lower grocery prices. Lower gas prices. Lower interest rates. Give Americans some financial breathing room. Instead, he went to war with Iran. It started with the “12-Day War.” A lot of people didn’t like it, but there was at least a defensible argument for it. The administration insisted that Iran’s nuclear program had been devastated and set back decades. Apparently, that was only halftime. Trump then launched a much larger war against Iran, pursuing regime change despite campaigning against the very sort of foreign intervention he was now undertaking. This was not what many of his voters signed up for. There wasn’t even a consensus that Iran posed an imminent nuclear threat requiring such an intervention. But the administration pushed forward anyway, suggesting the operation would be over in six weeks. That was more than eight months ago. And what have Americans gotten in return? No durable peace. No clear definition of victory. No convincing exit strategy. And higher energy costs that have rippled through the economy. For decades, American presidents had avoided a war of this magnitude with Iran. There were good reasons for that restraint. You can argue about why Trump made the decision. Was it pressure from Israel? Marco Rubio? Intelligence about Iran’s nuclear capabilities? A genuine belief that regime change would make the world safer? Those are legitimate questions. But they don’t change the political reality. Trump made the decision. He owns the consequences. And many of the same voters who overwhelmingly supported him in 2024 did so because they believed he would prioritize America, avoid unnecessary foreign wars, and improve their economic circumstances. Instead, they got another prolonged Middle Eastern conflict and an administration telling them the economic consequences were worth it. Apparently, a lot of voters disagree. And if tonight’s results deliver Democrats control of both the House and Senate, Trump will have effectively turned himself into a lame-duck president for the remainder of his term. Not because Tucker criticized him. Not because Massie opposed him. Not because Candace questioned him. But because Trump made decisions that alienated the very people who put him in office. I’ve never seen such a remarkable fall from grace in such a short period of time. And I think the most frustrating part is how avoidable so much of it was.
Well, it looks like the Democrats are going to control the Senate and the House. Bummer Good night.

One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us." Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

Bad policy, bad character make bad politics: erratic tariffs, impulsive Iran war, blanket pardons, apparent corruption, weaponized justice, ICE brutality, mountainous deficits, hiding Epstein, abandoning allies and coddling enemies. Hoping for a course correction, for the country and for my party.

After the Biden era, Americans wanted an economy that worked for them. Instead, they received a hastily executed war, headline after headline of scandals, a ballooning $40 trillion debt, and unpredictable tariffs. It’s time for Republicans to return to the principled conservative values that once defined us—and that we've steadily abandoned over the last decade.
