This desire to dump on people, particularly in the marketing space (which I care about), is hurting the ecosystem. We need to be more intentional about sharing knowledge and nurturing folks to be better at their jobs.
Let us help each other win.

This is the trick that works everywhere. Peer networking is often better than all those “big men” networking. More often than not, you’ll get what you’re looking for in your peers.

prioritize horizontal networking. look out for passionate and driven people your age you can become friends with. met @trueerudite at moonshot 2023, @ajanwachuku at moonshot 2024. @N1femi and @MilekeKolawole at devfest 2022. we built friendships from those events.

I feel like the issue with networking is that people expect it to translate to value that day. Sometimes it’s as simple as introducing yourself and exchanging info to stay connected across platforms after the event. There’s a time to directly pitch at someone you’re meeting and a time to keep it as simple as having open communication between you too.

My own idea of networking is just saying hi with a smile. And whenever I see them next, I say hi again. It builds a kind of familiarity such that if or when you do have somn for them, they’d already know you.

I think it’s very important as a person and a career professional to not have a mentality like this.
