Join Works in Progress at Building Abundance: How Britain can flourish in the age of AI, a day of ideas for rebuilding Britain’s economy and state so it can adapt to and embrace artificial intelligence and other opportunities for growth. luma.com/ria1khmw Sessions include: - @Dominic2306 and Morgan McSweeney in conversation on the decline and fall of British state capacity, - @JohnFingleton1 on the Nuclear Taskforce and its implementation by the government, one year on from its pledge to implement it in full. - @bswud, @SCP_Hughes and me on why nearly every attempt to get Britain building has failed; - @rachelwolf on what the public really thinks about economic growth and AI; - @lugaricano on messy jobs and Britain’s labour market; - @jujulemons on why Britain needs gigawatt-scale compute, and how to get it built here; - @salonium on why fixing clinical trials is the best industrial policy Britain could have; - @MichaelDnes1 on building the first new tunnel under the Pennines since 1954; - @RobertBoswall on how to finance and power the data centre buildout; and - @daisychristo on why VAR matters for state capacity. It will be held on Thursday 3rd December at the LSE, from 1pm to 7:30pm (doors open 1pm for a 1:20pm start). We're hosting it in association with the LSE Law School and School of Public Policy. Tickets are free. See you there! luma.com/ria1khmw

Notes On: Britain’s New Data Centre Covenant 1. Let’s unpack this. Today’s document sets out what the British Government would like to see from data centre companies as they seek to grow/build in Britain. The Government estimates it requires 6GW of AI data centre capacity by 2030 to protect its national interests (some distance to go!) This is an effort to create a framework for rewarding strategically valuable infrastructure. 2. It is a voluntary sets of commitments, HOWEVER, the Government is clear: if you meet the five criteria, we will expedite your applications and offer preferential Govt support. 3. For ‘Middle Power Watchers’, note that this is slightly different from the approach Australia is currently seeking views on. Aus has been more explicit about what constitutes a strategic data centre and treats hosting frontier AI training as a distinct policy objective, separate from simply hosting large data centres. 4. The Govt will establish a new Ministerial Control Centre for considering supportive action for strategic data centres, chaired by the Minister for AI Kanishka Narayan (good news), supported by the Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury and relevant ministers from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and other departments. Doc is explicit: for those who pass the reward, the centre: “will use the power of the state to accelerate time to power and speed up the planning process for the most strategic data centres.” 5. This is a good start. Britain still has some distance to go on getting its compute rollout correct and needs to move beyond rhetoric, which I view this as being a solid effort to do. I know the teams working on this worked extremely hard too. Good job! 6. Finally: Aus is putting their views out for feedback atm. British officials following me - may be worth speaking to your Aussie cousins. I’ll put together a fuller analysis on both in future.

Did you know? Heathrow's third runway could add over 100,000 jobs across the UK. At least 50,000 locally, plus 5,000 apprenticeships for young people. BUT it only happens if it gets built. TODAY, Heathrow's public consultation OPENS. And opponents will be filling it in. Here's how you can help: Respond to the consultation. Tell them you SUPPORT expansion and want it built FASTER. Opens: TODAY The DEADLINE is the 22nd of December First proposed in 2003. Earliest opening: 2039. We can't afford to wait any longer. Link below 👇
