Dam safety should be a much more urgent priority than it currently is
State audit finds more than 50 California dams in poor condition; Lake Hodges Dam rated the worst in state
A state audit released Tuesday found more than 50 dams across California are in poor condition, with the failure of any of them posing a potential danger to hundreds of thousands of people and causing billions of dollars in property damage.
The Lake Hodges Dam is rated the worst dam in the state by the California Division of Safety of Dams.

This is why the @BayAreaCouncil and @bayplanning sponsored AB2051 by @BuffyWicks, signed recently by @GavinNewsom. State agencies must ensure coastal flood protection projects are permitted with an urgency that matches what's happening on the shoreline.
Scientists warn that an ocean wave driven by El Niño conditions could raise Bay Area sea levels by as much as 9 in. by early next week. That’s on top of sea levels already more than 6 in. above predicted levels because of warm water along the West Coast. kqed.org/science/2002141/an-…
My favorite example of a genius behaving stupidly was when Pythagoras, who believed fava beans contained human souls and strictly prohibited his followers from eating them, was murdered by an angry mob who cornered him against a bean field which he refused to run through
Criminalize it
From @TheAthletic: LeBron James will make nearly four times as much promoting the Polymarket prediction market as he will from playing basketball. The deal may not break NBA rules, but it raises uncomfortable questions. nyti.ms/476hxP5
Proud to have worked on this bill for three years on behalf of cosponsor @BayAreaCouncil. This is a huge win for California and addiction recovery. TY @GavinNewsom and @MattHaneySF for your leadership, and to @DanielLurie for your partnership to make it happen.
Today, Governor Newsom signed into law two state bills that will help San Francisco tackle homelessness and build more housing.
The first is our drug-free housing bill, which allows cities in California to use state funding for sober, recovery-focused housing. Drug-free housing is an important tool for San Francisco residents working to overcome their addiction and get on a path to stability. Thank you to Assemblymember Haney and the Bay Area Council for their partnership on this.
The second is our workforce housing bill, which will give us a practical way to lower costs and make workforce housing more financially feasible, while maintaining affordability requirements through a three county pilot program. This will help us build more workforce housing for our teachers, nurses, first responders, and other middle class workers. I want to thank Assemblymember Haney for authoring this legislation, as well as Senator Wiener, Senator Arreguín, and City Attorney Chiu for their past work on it.
Thank you to Governor Newsom for signing these bills and being an advocate for the work we’re doing in San Francisco.
The purpose of a system is what it does

Chicago increased IZ from 10% to 20% in 2020. We delivered ZERO units downtown last year after averaging 4,000 a year for the past quarter century. You can see for yourself the results:
AB 2051, which requires state agencies to develop and present to the legislature a plan to coordinate permitting for coastal resilience projects, is LAW. TY @CAgovernor for signing, and @AsmBuffyWicks for authoring. Let’s gooo @BayAreaCouncil, @bayplanning
You often hear people say we shouldn't be farming in the desert, but you rarely hear people say we shouldn't be farming in the shade
TY @GavinNewsom for vetoing SB 954. Californians are done watching industrial jobs flee to states with lower wages, dirtier grids, and fewer protections for workers, clean air, and clean water. True climate leadership means making CA more competitive, not less. @XavierBecerra
Everyone stop what you're doing and form a safety bubble around California's remaining oil refineries
BREAKING: US stations are running out of diesel. Stations in North Texas are now posting "OUT" on their diesel signs, and an Orlando, Florida station has blanked its diesel price to 0.00 with the pump dry today.
California stations already began posting "out of diesel" signs on Sunday, with the national average at a record $6.31 a gallon.
Unsheltered homelessness devastates public health and safety for everyone but especially for homeless residents themselves. It shouldn’t be tolerated, ever.
The City of Berkeley on Tuesday said it will clear a large homeless encampment at 8th and Harrison streets after officials declared the area a fire hazard and public nuisance following a a deadly leptospirosis outbreak linked to rats. ktvu.com/news/berkeley-clear…
The tragedy about all this is that he was America’s best known con man for literally decades before 2016
A top priority of state and local policy makers should be to bring homeless services in house
$7.7 BILLION — that's how much compensation grew at America's homeless NGOs from 2013 to 2024, while homelessness rose to a record 771,480.
The system pays for inputs, not outcomes.
Our new report analyzed the IRS filings of 1,458 HUD-funded NGOs.

It's very odd that Democrats have a guy who's going to win in *North Carolina* by double digits... and the collective Dem media class views this as uninteresting, and would rather talk about how DSA candidates in D+80 districts are the key to the party's future
