So happy to finally see this out!
We harnessed the simplicity of coding in the cortical head-direction circuit (which represents a 1D circular variable 🧭) to look for principles governing interneuron tuning, which is notoriously fuzzy😵💫

1/ 🚨 Just out in @NatureNeuro! 🧠
We profiled >6,000 features of brain dynamics across humans + monkeys, mice, fish and worms 🧑🐒🐒🐁🐟🪱 to find a shared neural endpoint of anaesthesia: spatiotemporal isolation of local activity 🧵

How do brains plan actions towards goals?
To get at this question we studied mice navigating complex mazes as goals changed on every trial 🧵

Neural Data Analysis Workshop wrapped up this week with strong engagement and clear success.
Thanks to our speakers, the Head of Division for his support, and @NinaMilo_Lab and @AdrianDu_ for their help in making it happen. Thanks to everyone involved @DNS_UOM.

We’re delighted to announce our workshop on the latest open-source tools for neural data analysis.
We have great speakers from UCL & the University of Edinburgh.
Many thanks to everyone involved in organising the workshop @NinaMilo_Lab @AdrianDu_ and the support from @DNS_UOM .

We've uploaded a fruit fly. We took the @FlyWireNews connectome of the fruit fly brain, applied a simple neuron model (@Philip_Shiu Nature 2024) and used it to control a MuJoCo physics-simulated body, closing the loop from neural activation to action.
A few things I want to say about what this means and where we're going at @eonsys. 🧵
Thrilled to announce I'll be joining the Division of Neuroscience at @OfficialUoM as a Lecturer in Feb '26!
The DuLab will explore how the brain integrates sensory streams into internal maps 🌐 using the rodent head-direction circuit as a starting point 🧭
Fun fact: apparently "dulab" can mean “wheel” in Arabic - seems quite fitting for a lab obsessed with ring manifolds...
Finally, I'm not on this platform much these days so find me as @adrian-du.bsky.social on Bluesky if you're there and want to link up:)

Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.
In memory of David Lynch, we will continue to explore the otherworldly and the unknown. We will focus not on the loss, but on what we gained from the years we shared this planet with you. We will see you in our dreams.

ALT Using the Event Horizon Telescope, scientists obtained this image of the black hole at the center of galaxy M87, outlined by emission from hot gas swirling around it under the influence of strong gravity near its event horizon. The hot gas is shaped like a doughnut and is glowing a warm yellow color with reddish tint at its edges. The darkness of space is black in the background. Kicking off the new year with our new paper in @Nature! We find that touch-guided tongue control in mice relies on a collicular mechanosensorimotor map, analogous to collicular visuomotor maps associated with visually-guided orienting in many species.

When we enter a new environment, we use visual input to rapidly build an internal model of the local spatial environment. How does our brain do this? We review past literature and suggest some new ways forward in our new review in @CurrentBiology: authors.elsevier.com/sd/arti…

How to write a grant?
1. Write it for the reviewer, not you, the applicant.
2. Communicate in stories.
3. Make your story cohesive—leave no puzzling gaps.
4. Make your story resonate to keep the reviewer reading.
5. Accept chance and noise in peer-review.
