this is only because the worst tax, income tax, is automatically taken from you
if you hiked property tax and sales tax and slashed income, people would be a lot happier
changing the fundamental assumption of prisoners dilemma from having no information to having perfect information does indeed change the optimal result
the paper is ofc slop but it's much worse than that: it's inefficiently explained unoriginal slop
One reason @ESYudkowsky believes that powerful AIs may be able to cooperate in one-shot prisoner dilemas is because **he literally proved** that this is possible in general for two different AI systems as long as they can both read each other's source code (paper: arxiv.org/pdf/1401.5577),
the bowl is left outside because the parents are with their child trick-or-treating
afaik (in my neighborhood anyway) it's never the case that it's introverts who just don't feel like answering the door
Turns out Jane Does fake rape allegations were just a covert ad for a Netflix documentary
She had been filming with Netflix the last 2 years and came out with the allegations just in time to promote the movie
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Netflix did not spend two years filming with Jane Doe. Forbes reports that Netflix’s "Instadocs" is a speedy documentary series that covered the Cornell case just a month and a half after the lawsuit broke in September 2026.

if your alpha is crowded thats not your alpha that's your beta
Ex-Balyasny PM Ying Hua on why a crowded trade is a positioning game, not a fundamentals game:
"Sometimes a game is not fundamental. Sometimes the game is a positioning game."
"As long as there's someone who's willing to buy your shares at a higher price, that would mean someone needs to follow you."
"Because everyone's process is more or less the same, because everyone will more or less use the same data, your position's gonna be the same."
"You might not be playing a fundamental game. You might be playing a position game."
I don't believe this story because there's no chance a penthouse apartment overlooking central park was only $10000/month
Elsa Jean reveals how her former sugar daddy funded her entire life from age 18 including a $10k/month penthouse in Central Park.
“My OG sugar daddy that I don't speak to anymore, I mean, he has probably given me millions. I'm not joking.”
“He has carried my life. Paid for my whole entire life.”
“Whole entire life. That penthouse I had in New York that was in Central Park was him. $10,000 a month.”
you would definitely want this because then people would correctly be aligned with broader national sovereignty interests without even having to know what they are or even liking the people responsible
beauty of capitalism

Census numbers get used for all sorts of things besides voting that need to be scaled by residents, illegal or no. You wouldn't want local emergency services or schools cut back bc there are lots of illegals in your area.
right and wrong according to you right?
many such cases

Good for you. I don't care about the people's will on immigration. I care about right and wrong, and what makes economic sense and what doesn't.

this is me and not only do I not know Japanese I don't even like evangelion
I'm at the karaoke bar and @techno0ptimist knew EVERY WORD of the Evangelion theme song.
And she doesn't know Japanese.
widely agreed by the people that believe the government is a better steward of capital than the ones who created it
disqualifying opinion tbh lmao
.@mattyglesias proposes some widely agreed tax changes rather than a wealth tax:
the answer to all of this is special interests wanting it to be this way
i.e it's corruption same as s Bangkok
A sincere question about NYC:
Why does the city allow people to set up shops on the sidewalk selling fake goods? It looks ugly, effectively steals from the shop owner's they set up in front of, doesn't generate tax, blocks walking, and frankly the people selling these good seem like a pretty bad bunch overall.
I could fix the problem in a week easily. But the city just lets it happen. Why?
this is of course either profound arrogance or dishonesty
my money is on the latter and the biggest lie Zucman tells is to himself
This Hoover Institution study, which has fueled the deluge of ads (more than $200 million spent by billionaires so far) to defeat the California billionaire tax, is spectacularly misleading.
Let me explain its crucial flaw. 🧵
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Zucman argues that the tax will raise his projected revenue because billionaires who leave CA after 1/1/26 will be taxed anyway.
At least $542B of net worth (Page, Brin, Thiel) departed the state by 12/31/25.
The entire thread is a misleading denial of this fact.

🧵In 2019, California billionaire tax crusader Gabriel Zucman made an astonishing claim to the NY Times: billionaires pay a lower avg tax rate than poor people in the US.
I noticed something fishy though: Zucman's NYT chart did not match his own published data from a 2018 paper
