After almost six years of war, Nazi Germany officially surrendered on 7 May 1945.
The following day, Winston Churchill announced on the radio that the war in Europe had ended.
Today, on #VEDay, we remember those who fought and died on the continent to protect our freedom.

Today marks 79 years since #VEDay, the end of the Second World War in Europe. Join us in remembering the millions of servicemen and women, Allied Forces and those across the Commonwealth, who made great sacrifices for our freedom.
We will never forget their courage.
