100% of these deaths would have been prevented inside an overdose prevention center.
Denver is averaging 12 fatal public overdoses every month in 2023.
That’s 72 people dead since @COSenDem and @COHouseDem voted against allowing Denver to authorize and pilot its own OPC.
People have died in bars, in bus stations, in parks. They have taken their final breaths in a city recreation center, a liquor store, a church. In parking lots, rail yards and alleys. Public overdoses are on the rise in Denver. trib.al/Vus7P1K

Bars, bus stations and parks. Parking lots and alleys. A liquor store. A church.
These are the Denver public spaces where people have overdosed and died. As public overdoses rise here, bystanders are increasingly thrust into the role of life savers.

This morning I watched Sgt Oniell antagonize a homeless man, threaten him, unlawfully detain him and then leave his belongings sitting on the sidewalk to be stolen while he took him to jail. Way to escalate a calm situation @DenverPolice
Cruelty IS the point.

If you're a victim of DV in Denver right now, and you're getting the shit kicked out of you by your abuser, just know this city doesn't GAF.
No options, no one to help, nowhere to go. Just die by the hands of your abuser. That's the city's answer today. @MikeJohnstonCO

"State and government-sanctioned encampments are not what they’re being presented as to the public. These so-called “solutions” to homelessness bear a haunting resemblance to concentration camps."

"There is a concern we are moving [people] from broken down tents to glorified boxes. There's this myth that just because you're poor you should all be huddled together. In actuality, when you integrate people into the neighborhoods is when we see better outcomes," said Calderón.
"The idea of us sectioning them off and putting them in certain communities... in the long scheme of things, that doesn't do a lot for the stigmas these people face." bit.ly/3Pb9Qin

Mayor Johnston notified HAND last night they will postpone the sweep one day. He continues to try and justify this sweep due to shootings in the area that camp residents are victim to, not perpetrating. Scattering this encampment to nearby blocks will not protect them. Cancel it!

Mayor Johnston Plans to Sweep Encampment with less than 24 hours Notice!@$#
He is trying to justify this sweep because camp residents were victim to a shooting. Instead of providing support after trauma - he plans to sweep. housekeysactionnetwork.com/2…

“How many times can we either hear the police double down on their actions being justified, and then on the other hand say that they need to build community trust. One thing tends to cancel out the other, and takes us back to square one.”Calderón said. 🧵

It took a new Denver mayor to implement a good idea that should've been supported years ago.
"@HousekeysAction founder Terese Howard said she and her colleagues have been pushing a program like this for years, a request that only former City Council member @CouncilCandi heeded."

We documented directions from 59 people living at encampments about what is needed and best to provide trash services for encampments.
These survey findings should be the guide for how trash services should be implemented at encampments.
