Campaigning & Alaska Governor Candidates: My salty, crusty self is all in for a bit of good natured fun now and again. Even healthy dollops of cheek, snark, and bluntness when occasions call for it. Decades of dealing with grizzled salty, crusty and cantankerous gents and a couple of decades of global adventures will do that to a girl. However…. this is genuinely NOT what I want or expect to see from a candidate petitioning the people of Alaska to hire him to sit in the governor’s seat of our great state. Not only is it grossly inappropriate but it’s also incredibly shortsighted in regards to making a mockery of WOMEN who wear those specific headscarves as symbols of their cultural heritage and most importantly, their faith. More specifically when these scarves are worn as head coverings and articles of modesty in houses of worship among Orthodox believers. Of which, Alaska has several communities scattered around the state. Especially worthy of mention here is the fact that these Orthodox believers form some of Alaska’s oldest faith based communities— going back to the 1700s when Alaska was still part of Russia. I don’t know who on JKT’s campaign team (or circle of associates) it was that convinced him this particular cosplay was a good idea given the role he’s after in Alaska politics but, what in the everlasting WHAT is even happening here? And WHO approved this? Do you NOT have a proper PR team, sir? 😳 The optics? Honestly, could not be worse. SMH. Since we are here, let’s discuss those, shall we? 🤨 A) Intended or not, the underlying message this sort of shenanigan sends is, “it’s perfectly acceptable for politicians to mock Orthodox Christians during public campaign season.” The broader message is “AKDems have ZERO respect for Alaska’s Christians.” Full stop. 😡 Not at all a surprise considering their very own AK Data Director is openly hostile to Christians and is on the record calling at least one Catholic believer (who previously ran for a municipal seat in Anchorage) a Na*i among other hideous things for being a man who stood on principle by speaking up for girls and women. B) God help us if this man becomes our governor and he has to do any sort of international business. Especially with Asia. There is ZERO percentage of a chance they will take Alaska seriously with this kind of nonsense. It’s unstatesmanlike, childish, highly disrespectful, and dishonorable for someone who is expected to carry the stature, weight of responsibility, and dignity of one that sits in Alaska’s highest elected office. @jktforak I strongly recommend you have a chat with the lady who put this up on Facebook and have her take it down. It’s extremely poor judgment on your part thinking this was a good move. I also strongly suggest you issue a public apology. Especially considering it’s probable you genuinely did not know what these scarves are used for. And for the record, I am being gracious here. @Bernadette4Gov @Alaska4Bronson @tregtaylorak and @NickforAlaska I sincerely hope you all take this into consideration and have your campaign teams add this to their “How not to run a campaign in Alaska” playbooks. This is shameful and should not be glossed over, minimized or ignored. The anti-Christian attacks both direct and indirect are not something we should have to tolerate in the USA. This is the sort of thing I expect to see overseas, not here and it needs to be addressed more often than what it has been.
