The thing to remember: don't look at Budgets in isolation. Taxes have been rising since 2021. The extra tax we're paying this year is the *cumulative* result of five successive Budgets, under three Chancellors. This chart shows who's responsible & for how much.

When you say minimum wage should be frozen people make it out like you want people to be worse off. AI decimating British employment, people are being laid off in their thousands. The government needs to make it cheaper to employ people, not more expansive. This is lunacy.

If you want to know why everything is costing more, it’s because minimum wage has increased by over 50% since 2020. That increase then feeds through to prices, which feeds through into higher payments for benefits and pensions.

Norway’s equivalent NHS has mandatory charges for GP appointments, consultations and tests. If any political party here advocated something similar, journalists like Faisal would hysterically report it as fascism. If we did have a sovereign wealth fund, the BBC would be busily pumping out stories about how it invests in data centres while people are dying on waiting lists now look at this struggling food bank. Political journalists need to stop advocating policies modelled on foreign fiscal prudence - as their screeching and hyperbole would make them impossible to apply here. Our political journalists and their awful takes are one of the reasons the county’s in such a mess.
NEW Britain’s missing sovereign wealth fund… Treasury officials have modelled that had the UK done what Norway did with North Sea revenues, there would be a £1 trillion fund… As Chancellor sets up Energy Wealth Fund, a look at the long historical argument about where the oil windfall went, including from interviews with those who have run Norways $2.4 trillion fund, now the biggest in the world, filled from the proceeds of the same North Sea. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm4g…

Norway's fund works because Norwegians can look at $2.4trn of Nvidia and Palantir shares for twenty years and not touch it the people most upset Britain never built one would have forced it to dump Palantir after the first demo and spent the rest on nurses in the first recession

Yet apparently the rich don’t pay their “fair share” of tax. How much more tax should they pay to meet the “fair share” threshold? What is a “fair amount” of the £300k they should be able to keep?
Mad when you see it in a graphic how much tax a £300,000 salary pays in tax.

The UK’s public sector debt has officially surpassed £3 trillion, on a provisional basis. It is striking how rapidly £2 trillion pounds has been added to the national debt. ONS: “Public sector net debt first exceeded £2 trillion in June 2020, during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, having first exceeded £1 trillion in February 2010 following the global financial crisis.”

Reading the FT and this is wild: ft.com/content/248b7408-b4cd… The UK taxes labor at 28% below GBP50270 and that jumps to 47% at that threshold and then it goes higher to 62% at 100k and then an additional rate of 47% after 125140. Incentive says to withhold labor up to a certain threshold because costs go up. Now, on a macro level, what does that add up to? A lot of underutilized labor.
