Russian trolls pushing the might makes right argument. Let’s forgo the rule of law and return to feudalism. Such a sad lack of awareness.
In Canada we grew up believing certain trade inequities were reasonable to protect our ‘Canadian culture’ (whatever that is — poutine? Hating America? The fiction of a ‘mosaic?’).
Canada is much smaller than the US — so this seemed reasonable to my young Canadian brain. And it is why today so many in Canada still have no idea the advantages the US bestows on its northern neighbor. I have two degrees in economics and in that five years of study I don’t think any lopsided trade agreements *in favor of Canada* were ever even mentioned, let alone studied deeply.
But now that I’ve grown up … why? If a country has a stronger bargaining position because of its size or ability, why should it not take full advantage of it?
Yes, there are good reasons to create a more balanced deal in order to work towards a powerful continental economic zone that is mutually beneficial … but ‘balance’ doesn’t mean equal. Even in that balance, no country with the upper hand should be so willing to give it up so freely.
At this juncture there is every reason for Trump to be imposing exactly this type of equilibrium on a (less than grateful) smaller, less competent and less powerful neighbor.
🇺🇸🇨🇦
So let me get this straight, the US has violated ‘the best trade agreement ever’ that Trump negotiated, while Canada has followed the rules. Then they play silly games posting memes generated by their Russian handlers?
So let me get this straight. Canada’s been actively discriminating against American producers for years, and rather than working with @POTUS to establish fair and free trade between Canada and the United States, their solution is to further discriminate against American workers and businesses?
Canada should come to the table, negotiate with the United States, and strike a deal that treats Americans fairly rather than joining China in retaliating against the U.S.
President Trump is right to use all available tools to pressure Canada to end its discrimination against U.S. products.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
USMCA (negotiated by Trump) provides duty-free treatment for most qualifying US-Canada trade. Canada's recent tariffs respond to US 50% tariffs on Canadian goods after bilateral talks collapsed; disputes involve dairy, alcohol and autos under ongoing USMCA review.

So true. Let’s stop feeding the trolls.
Replying to @nnncurtis
There are an estimated 200,000 Chinese and Russian trolls on social media, stirring dissent among western allies. Have you noticed all the fake names? Like @dave223456. And handles like TruePatriot or RegularGuy. Throwing insults while hiding their identity. They have ruined X, Instagram and more. It’s no use engaging with them; they’re paid to throw shade.

This paper answers why psychopaths keep ending up as CEOs and politicians.
Researchers mapping out the mechanics of "successful psychopathy" found that corporate capitalism and modern political selection systems are not neutral.
They are hyper-efficient filtering machines.
And they are specifically optimized to select for the exact traits normal people find repulsive.
Normal leaders are constrained by empathy, guilt, and long-term risk aversion. They hesitate when a decision hurts people. They feel the weight of collateral damage.
Psychopaths don’t have an emotional brake pedal.
When a company or a political party needs someone to ruthlessly slash budgets, fire thousands of people, bluff through a crisis, or project absolute, unshakeable confidence, normal candidates stutter.
Psychopaths step right up.
Their superficial charm, pathological fearlessness, and total lack of remorse look identical to "strong leadership" during an interview or a campaign.
They weaponize corporate chaos. While everyone else is panicking, they ruthlessly manipulate the narrative, step over their peers, and take credit for the wins.
They weaponize charisma to dazzle the board or the voters, and hide their emptiness behind a mask of high performance.
The system rewards the ruthlessness, promotes them to the top, and punishes anyone who tries to slow them down with ethics.
The researchers call it a feedback loop of structural decay.
Corporations and governments built an environment where being entirely devoid of a conscience isn't a disqualifier.
It’s a competitive advantage.

35 years later, everything I believed about “free trade” (which was never discussed as “fair trade”) was as right as it’s been for 35 years. Of course Turner was right! Because the US economy has been 17-20 times larger than Canada’s. And our Conservatives eschewed sovereignty.

#BREAKING: Psaki: “Multiple outlets are reporting tonight that Donald Trump has essentially wiped out what is left of the US Election Assistance Commission that is a bipartisan commission that helps states and local officials run elections. They certify election equipment, they distribute federal election funds, they maintain the national mail voter registration form, they basically do a whole bunch of things that help elections across the country run smoothly. But as we have seen through his actions over and over and over again, Donald Trump does not want elections in this country to run smoothly, quite the opposite.”🤦♀️

#BREAKING: Legendary #Maddow: “That all happened in February. Now it’s June, the bridge really was supposed to open…the invitations had gone out for Friday…but nope, Donald Trump says no…Headline in Ontario Construction News: ‘Gordie Howe International Bridge opening delayed again. No date in site.’ Trump administration is insisting that this bridge should NOT be allowed to open because heaven forbid a MAGA donor be inconvenienced, one billionaire family that donates to Donald Trump, heaven forbid they be inconvenienced, because that to a corrupt administration, that is way worse than literally tens of thousands of people a day, being deprived of the use of this fully built
fully paid for, ready to be open, state of the art, brand new beautiful bridge.” 🤦♀️
Buttigieg: We didn't know it, but we've all been trusting our lives to the restraint of whoever the president might be. And now we have a president who is completely unrestrained. And so the only answer to that is a functioning Congress.
It turns out we do not have a functioning Congress. The House of Representatives is not representative. One of the most important organs of our democracy is not democratic.
They say, "Oh, no. We're not manipulating the map to disempower black people. We're manipulating the map to disempower Democrats who happen to be black people.”
So, the time has come to make it impossible to manipulate the map for any reason and just have fair maps.
