85 years ago Charlie Chaplin made the greatest speech of the century (playing a mock version of Hitler). We'd be wise to heed his words TODAY as they are incredibly appropriate now, just as they were in 1940.
Don't bow down to dictators.
_Fight_.

Decisions affecting human life, freedom, and the use of force must always remain subject to effective, informed, and responsible human oversight. For this reason, artificial intelligence must be “disarmed”, and I encourage the States meeting in Geneva in November to take concrete steps toward banning lethal autonomous weapons.

So many people seem genuinely astonished by this local ceasefire in Oleshky, where Russian occupation and the fighting have driven the city into a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe.
Turns out, all it takes is an order from the Kremlin, and Russians and Ukrainians stop shooting at each other. They can calmly and civilly arrange the evacuation of innocent civilians facing starvation, even allow Ukrainian and American journalists to be present on the ground, and so on.
Well, duh.
There is not, and never has been, a single adequate, rational, even remotely sane reason to wage a war aimed at destroying Ukraine. This is the stupidest, most brainless, absurd, pointless, contrived, and deceitful war in human history.
The Kremlin wanted to give Donald Trump a little gift ahead of the elections, so the Kremlin gave an order to put the bloodbath on hold for a few dozen hours.
All it would take is a single order from the Kremlin, and not only would a local ceasefire become possible, but the entire war would end. Just like that. Instantly.
And 95% of Russians wouldn't give a single damn. They would happily accept absolutely anything as yet another "great victory of Russian arms," provided that's how state television explained it to them.
And with a snap of the fingers, all those insane fairy tales about "NATO expansion," "Nazi Satanists," the "multipolar world," "historical Russian lands," and all the rest of that bullshit would simply vanish into thin air.
The problem is that, in this insane, upside-down looking-glass world, absolutely everything is being done to encourage a megalomaniacal maniac, driven mad by impunity and boredom, to never, ever, under any circumstances stop the war, but to keep it going indefinitely.
Instead, he is constantly appeased and rewarded for it.
Halloween horror at its best. 🎃
Shh. Do you hear that? Somewhere in Russia, the occupiers are scared of Palyanytsia, a rocket with a name they can’t pronounce.
Together with other ghostbusters, Behemoth, Vampire and Flamingo, it will haunt Russia long after Halloween.
Donate $24+ to Sky Defense between October 29 and November 4, and you could win a t-shirt with the ghostbuster of your choice.
Help drive evil spirits out of Ukraine.

The future of #ArtificialIntelligence is not pre-determined. As a technology developed by human beings, its future depends on the choices we make. We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.
Iconic. “Do you trust the Russians?” Harry Truman was once asked
“No. They broke every agreement they ever made with me. That's why I don't trust them,” replied the 33rd President of the United States.
80 years later, nothing has changed…
Interesting thread showing how disinfo campaigns work:

These are some of the tweets from the Starlink disinformation campaign. The tweets themselves came mostly from accounts that appeared to be operated by humans, but there were some signs of inauthentic activity/automation in the retweets. These tweets are copy-paste repetitions of the seed phrases, which blamed Ukraine for bringing this on themselves by "hacking" Starlink terminals.

Who cares what the Country gets. If narcissist/sociopath dictators cared about their Country they wouldn't start wars, grift off of the People, or be dictators in the first place. Such people pretend to care inasmuch as the populace would allow them to pretend to care while they consolidate their rule and make dissent impossible via secret police and mass surveillance. Tale as old as time. USA is not immune.
In fact, with the failing education, dumbification via horrible foods, chemicals everywhere, tiktokification and now mass AI-brainrot, USA is ripe for the taking by any well-spoken populist. USA was lucky to get a demented old grifter. The next "Trump" might actually know how to be a good Führer. If the whole system remains ripe for the authoritarian taking.
You teach kids to not get into strangers' vans, and yet don't teach them not to get the whole country into well-spoken-strangers' vans.

Another good day for press freedom, similar to what happened in Hungary when Orbán lost. Will anyone at Fox News apologize or resign for being state TV if the Democrats sweep the midterms?
📺 “We reported events one-sidedly for years”: Serbian TV apologizes to viewers after Vučić's party loses the election
Radio Television of Vojvodina (RTV) opened its news broadcast with footage of celebrations following the Student List's election victory — scenes it had failed to show the previous evening.
“For years, we failed to fulfill our duty. We kept silent, turned a blind eye, reported events one-sidedly, and failed to ask the necessary questions. For that, we owe our viewers an apology,” news anchor Goran Eror said.
Following the controversy, RTV's acting editor-in-chief Nenad Čačić resigned.
A similar incident occurred in Hungary, where state television also apologized to viewers after Viktor Orbán's election defeat.
Maybe Anthropic should stop pushing frontier AI immediately and initialise global efforts to #BanSuperintelligence then? They are making a product uniquely suited for dictators. What the f are they thinking continuing doing this?!
Dario Amodei: AI may be uniquely well suited to autocracy and deepening repression.
“We already see it in the kind of surveillance state possible with today’s technology.”
“AI can make individualized propaganda and break into computer systems.”
“It could surveil everyone in a population, detect dissent everywhere and suppress it.”
“You could have a huge army of drones that could go after each individual person.”
“It’s really scary, and we have to stop it.”
What's with the fashion nowadays, why does eg. Zara want me to look like a gay poor plumber from the 70s?

NEW AD: Meet @DavidSacks, Trump’s AI and crypto czar.
Republicans like Jon Husted are letting him flood our communities with data centers and block AI regulation.

AI copyright lawsuits are coming thick and fast. In just the last couple of weeks:
- USA Today & 18 other papers sued OpenAI
- around 300 authors sued Meta
- a pair of musicians sued Black Forest Labs
The Black Forest Labs one is particularly interesting - I wouldn't be surprised if much bigger music rights holders follow suit.
The pace of arrival of these lawsuits is speeding up, not slowing down.
The bigtech would love for the whole WORLD to be afraid to speak out. With today's surveillance and AI it is already possible beyond previous autocracies' wildest dreams. We're sleepwalking into a dystopian nightmare.

Employees at Google have told the BBC that staff are scared to speak out about AI safety and its uses in warfare because their employment contracts prohibit them from publicly criticising the company.
"In principle I'm not allowed to criticise Google for the duration of my life," Sofia Liguori told the BBC. But she decided to do so "because I believe it's important for these things to be known and I also think that talking about facts is not criticising".
Liguori added that at Google "people are scared of retaliation and putting their career at risk. You feel you are being watched, you can't speak."

Lately, the President of the United States has been repeating a claim almost every day, which he believes is the main reason why the Russians failed to capture Kyiv in three days:
“The Russians had a thousand tanks moving along a concrete highway.
They would have been in Ukraine in four hours if they had been traveling at a tank’s maximum speed — exactly 48 miles per hour. Nothing could have stopped them. The war would have been over in one day.
And this very stupid general — I have no idea who he is.
He decided to turn right into farmland and then left toward Kyiv, instead of staying on the highway. On the concrete highway, a perfectly good road, where everything was going very well for them.
Another three and a half to four hours, and the whole war would have been over.
But eventually, they got stuck in the mud.”
They say Donald Trump is given news and briefings on sheets of paper with pictures on them so that the president of the world’s most powerful country can get up to speed more quickly.
We hope this post reaches at least one US government official who can print out and show him photographs of Russian columns destroyed by Ukrainian defenders. This was made possible, in part, by Javelins supplied to Ukraine by the American people — for which we are sincerely grateful — not Trump, shortly before Russia’s full-scale invasion.
One of the world’s “most powerful” armies, backed by a nuclear power, was stopped by Ukrainian defenders armed with old Soviet-era equipment, a handful of Javelins, and a few Bayraktar drones.
While almost all of our Western “partners” were betting on Kyiv falling within mere dozens of hours, Ukrainian defenders did the impossible, burning Russian columns and killing the invaders.
Ukraine stood firm. And it still stands today.
And no Putin sympathizer who is merely passing through — whether the US president or anyone else — will ever be able to rewrite history in Russia’s favor.
The truth is on our side.
Thank you for sharing our material. It matters.
