There is clearly going to be the need for an immense amount of solidarity with folks in BC over the coming years. Sending heaps of it on this morning after: Indigenous rights, climate action, human rights...

.@leilanifarha is criss-crossing the country as the 2026 Massey Lecturer, engaging in a vital and timely conversation with Canadians about the need to forge a values-based response to our deep housing crisis. Her op-ed in the Globe and Mail offers a thoughtful overview of a very different, necessary way forward:
"The fix isn’t to help the same firms keep doing the same thing, it’s to change values because values determine actions. These values already exist. International human-rights law are the enduring values, recognizing the right of everyone to adequate housing: a place to live in security, peace and dignity, where housing is affordable based on household income, habitable, and secure from wanton evictions. Under Anishinaabe law, the Seven Grandfather/Grandmother Teachings call on us to live by love, respect, humility and truth. Neither treats a home as an asset. Both place value on people and relationships."
So looking forward to Leilani's final lecture in Ottawa this coming Thursday. Grab yourself a ticket if you haven't done so yet.

I'm so pleased to be one of the speakers joining the #PeoplesMusicFestival, October 24th and 25th — a free online event bringing artists and changemakers together around music, empathy, and action. These are pivotal times nationally and globally, and I'll be joining other speakers to explore the questions that matter most. Grab your free ticket at peoplesmusicfestival.com/, with a Full Access Pass for everything on demand.
Ottawa friends, join us Friday, October 30th as we dig into a vital question that merits a full-on national conversation, but is steaming ahead with hardly a whisper of critical discussion. What is the the real cost of Canada's military spending spree?
🇻🇪 DEEP DIVE: US forces captured Nicolas Maduro on January 3 and his deputy Delcy Rodriguez has run Venezuela since.
Alex Neve of the UN fact-finding mission says the laws that criminalise dissent, the forces that tortured and the leaders who ordered it all remain in place untouched.

Navi Pillay didn’t wait for permission to speak the truth– she examined the evidence and reached the conclusion that genocide is happening in Gaza. These findings will inform the pursuit of justice, despite dehumanization, despite anti-Palestinian racism, despite complicity or cruel indifference.

If only.
If only he had the slightest inkling as to what peace truly is and how it is both beautifully precious and heartbreakingly fragile. If only he appreciated that at the frontlines of conflict and repression, it is grassroots communities, activists and human rights defenders who forge paths to peace and, as reflected in this year's Nobel honour, so very often those peace visionaries are women. If only he could look in a mirror and see what and who stands in the way.
If only he could see that we live in a world that brutally denies peace to so many, simply because of who they are. That is the cruelest of all the obstacles to peace.
If only he understood that the true peacemakers, peacebuilders and champions of peace in our world are not those who seek their own glory. They do not covet prizes. They yearn for one reward. Peace.
If only. Alas, two words that say so much about leadership in our world in 2026. And which must propel us, the people, to stand resolutely for peace anywhere and everywhere that we can.

The irony (deliberate or accidental) of this coming on the very day that the world is celebrating Navi Pillay's Nobel Peace Prize, lifting up - among her many immense contributions - her past role as a judge on the International Criminal Court. The Court that Marco Rubio insists is a "rogue court" (not sure how rogue an institution is when it is supported by 125 states, including Canada) and which the US government is now intent on "crippling its ability to operate".
Needless to say, the world needs a strong and effective ICC now, more than ever.
To date, Canada has been muted at best in its response to the Trump Administration's attacks on court personnel, including Canadian judge Kimberly Prost.
No longer. We need to hear a full-throated and impassioned defence of the ICC from @MarkJCarney and @AnitaAnandMP, alonsgide a categorical rejection of all US sanctions, and demonstration of a leadership role in catalyzing the 'middle powers countering the hegemons' from the PM's famous Davos speech, to leave no stone unturned in a strategic effort to lift up the Court and international justice more widely at this crucial juncture.
It is time to come off the sidelines. We did, after all, play a central role in the creation of the Court. Let's make it clear that we truly meant it.

In Pillay we have a champion the world can rally around to stand up to the brutalities that shame & scar the world.
PM Mark Carney should do more than offer congratulations to Pillay; he must seize this moment to lead a campaign to save and extend international law.
A welcome affirmation that, yes, human rights do - and must - prevail. Talk about honouring the right person, for the right thing at the right time. Navi Pillay’s Nobel Peace Prize celebrates a trailblazing, tireless woman of remarkable courage and steadfast conviction. And it sends a clarion message that in our turbulent, divided world of conflict, hate and misinformation, it is to human rights norms, global institutions of justice and core precepts of the rule of law that we must turn. That is where we find and lift up truth, and that is where peace ultimately finds its home.
Navi Pillay has given her life to that pursuit. And done so with humility, devotion to our common humanity, and a mischievous sense of fun. She reminds us all of the power we hold in our own hands.

Just finished Doug Roche's most recent book (his 26th, at age 97, and none of us believe him when he says it is his last). Speaks thoughtfully (of course) to the moment we face - in Canada and globally - with such clarity and conviction. Get a copy and fill yourself with Doug's insights and wisdom.
My just-released book looks at Carney & Canada’s role in the human security agenda. Excerpt published in the @TheHillTimes linked below.
Available online now, and in bookstores soon.

This could not be a better choice at a time of repeated attacks against international justice. She is a former ICC judge at a time when the US administration is seekinng to destroy the ICC. She has headed the commission of Inquiry which found that Israel commited the crime of genocide at the time when many States are trying to defend and protect Israel’s actions. She has defended human rights, at a time when States are seeking to hollow out their rights commitments. She fought against apartheid institutionalized and systemic racism at a time when we are facing a resurgence of it. There is no better choice than Navi Pillay.
Amazing moment.
Navi Pillay has received the Nobel Peace Prize ! bbc.co.uk/news/live/ck5yng9z…
We are at the Nuremberg Court; I cannot think of a stronger symbol for her Nobel prize.
We are all so thrilled!
This is her first reactions upon hearing the news:

Hard to imagine this would actually go ahead, but Pete Hegseth's mere proposition of livestreaming a firing squad execution is grotesque and vile.
