Wrote this essay for @TheLondonMag about Sycamore Gap, Roman ruins, decline and fall, remembering the dead, caring for kids. It’s kind of a dark autumnal read, but heatwave respite perhaps.

Thousands of people in the center of Rio chanting obscene and justified anti Neymar slogans is the vibe right now

This is an important and brave message from workers at Meta, where the CWU have members.
If the allegations are true that big tech firms have been suppressing the voice of @LulaOficial and ignoring extreme right-wing disinformation, everyone who believes in fair play should be seriously concerned.
American tech billionaires must not be allowed to interfere in democratic elections - the future of Brazil must be decided by the Brazilian people alone.
Meta employees denounce interference in Brazil elections.

Hugely important transatlantic intervention here from Meta workers, underscoring serious foul play from the Trumpian-Bolsonaroian far-right in the Brazilian presidential election

My take on the second round: While there is a good chance Brazil may still elect the crooked son of a convicted idiot, three weeks after his first-round victory, it’s also clear that Lula is back in the game thanks to a historic mobilization.
President @LulaOficial's supporters have occupied public space, hoping that their mobilization can drive up turnout and defy the polls: jacobin.com/2026/10/election…

"I haven't said anything about Israel"? My guy, you literally produced and starred in a Netflix show glorifying a Mossad agent.
Sacha Baron Cohen on suspicion that the calls for a boycott of his new film, 'Ali G: Who Iz I?,' are tied to his past support of Israel:
"Well, I haven’t said anything about Israel. I think people are being portrayed as things that they are not on social media and it’s problematic. We are in a world where people can’t distinguish between facts and lies, and that’s something that I’ve spent a lot of the last few years trying to fix. For example, I co-founded a group called Stop Hate for Profit with the NAACP and Color of Change and the ADL and certain other civil rights groups to stop the misinformation and incitement of racism on social media. So, I’m not surprised that prominent Jews are being targeted. I knew that this was going to happen. The level of organization is surprising, but this is a trend of Jews being portrayed in certain ways and trying to be silenced." bit.ly/4BpPgkz

This is a great cover (one or two surprising names!) and the sort of thing likely to impact an utterly absurd government stance
OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

If you ever sought out the novels of Sally Rooney in bookshops – when that was still possible – you’d know they sit in the fiction stacks adjacent to the novels of another SR whose books have been withdrawn in dastardly political circumstances. Until last week, “Rooney” and “Rushdie” had little in common beyond being shelfmates; now they have more than just a physical proximity.
@tanjil_rashid_: This is censorship by other means newstatesman.com/comment/202…
