‘Jack-o’-lantern’ originally referred to a man with a lantern or to a night watchman.
In 17th-century Britain, people often called men whose names they didn't know by a common name like ‘Jack.’
unknown man carrying a lantern = ‘Jack with the lantern’ / ‘Jack of the lantern’

The people who settled this country didn't come here and sign up for welfare.
One of the things that almost beggars belief to me is how wide-ranging frontiersmen were during the colonial/frontier period in America. Folks like George Washington, Robert Rogers, Daniel Boone, etc. would just go on missions of hundreds and hundreds of miles, through areas that were total wilderness, zero roads, no maps... Imagine just deciding to pop up to Fort Detroit from North Carolina, just hope you don't get balled up by Shawnee on the way. Their instinctive navigational skills must have been on a level we can't even fathom in the modern age.

An oldie but a goodie. In 1968 a bunch of entitled hippy bastards sent a letter detailing their specious demands to the Warden and Fellows of Wadham College, Oxford. This was their letter of reply, which speaks to how far the academy has since fallen.

Reading The Pioneers last night, this passage about the earliest settlers of Marietta stood out:
“Those who had more resources, lent, or gave, to those who had less.”
An early frost had destroyed much of their harvest, leaving families facing starvation. Yet these people worked through their shared struggle by helping their neighbors, giving what little they had to those with even less.
Before the massive welfare state created widespread dependency, Americans understood their obligations to family, neighbors, and community. We’ve slowly transferred those responsibilities, and the loyalties that came with them, to the state.
We didn’t eliminate the obligation to care for one another, we replaced the bonds of family and community with dependence on government.
That’s the Marxist impulse.

Southern grandmothers think like horse breeders about their grandkids potential mates. They’re all eugenicists.
