The chinese can eat bat soups and force you to wear a mask while being secluded at your home for a year but you can't call Mao a dictator because they will get mad

We all know about Mao’s record of unity and progress 🤦‍♂️ During the 1948 siege of Changchun, Lin Biao’s forces blocked civilians from escaping, and at least 160,000 reportedly starved to death in five months. Land reform between 1947 and 1952 killed an estimated 1.5 to 2 million people, while the Campaign to Suppress Counter-Revolutionaries led to hundreds of thousands more executions. During the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), factional violence and massacres in Guangxi reportedly killed over 80,000 people, alongside an estimated 400,000 deaths in rural collective killings. Mao’s claim to have freed China from foreign influence also needs context. Under the 1950 Sino-Soviet Treaty, the USSR retained strategic interests in Port Arthur and Manchurian railways, while Soviet akso got privileges in Xinjiang’s mineral resources and legal immunity for Soviet advisers. During the Great Leap Forward (1958–1962), an estimated 45 million people died from famine, overwork and state violence, yet China continued exporting grain, pork and edible oils to the Soviet Union, East Germany and Cuba. Infact before changing into market economy China was big importer. In 1961 China reportedly imported nearly six million tonnes of grain from countries such as Canada, Australia and Argentina. The economic damage was just as severe. The Great Leap Forward reportedly destroyed up to 40% of rural housing in some accounts, wiped out large numbers of trees in several provinces and left poorly built dams that contributed to flooding and silting. Backyard furnaces consumed farming tools to produce poor-quality iron, while reports from Henan and Kaifeng allegedly found that over 70% of some factory output was defective. The Cultural Revolution also devastated education. Chinese government statistics cited in the original account reportedly showed that by 1978, 30% to 40% of children and young people were illiterate or semi-literate, with figures exceeding 50% in some areas. Mao’s image of universal public reverence was maintained through propaganda, compulsory study of the Little Red Book, censorship and the persecution of critics labelled rightists or counter-revolutionaries, many of whom were sent to labour camps or executed. Ordinary people nevertheless resisted through black markets, rumours and everyday acts of non-compliance. When Zhou Enlai died in April 1976, mass protests erupted in Tiananmen Square against the Maoist leadership. China’s later economic transformation came after Mao’s death, when Deng Xiaoping introduced market reforms, reduced the role of collective farming and expanded private enterprise. Modern China’s rise owes much to these reforms, not simply to Mao’s economic legacy.

Men aren’t as motivated to work because it no longer gets them a good wife and children like it used to. Without a family to provide for they don’t see as much reason to work hard anymore.
Young men no longer have any attainable goals to work toward in life. Today’s women are unmarriageable, home prices are exorbitant, wages don’t cover the cost of living, travel destinations are overrun by third-world migrants. Escapism is all that men have left.

I hate to say it but polygamy makes perfect sense in 2026 Can’t afford a house? 3 household incomes Can’t find a man you respect to marry that doesn’t cheat? Be a second wife Some women don’t want kids? Second wife Some women are too old and have too much debt? Again second wife I hate to say it but in the society we are in it’s either going to be older single women living together or women sharing men

A reminder that an underrated argument for libertarianism is that you’d experience less anxiety about elections if the state had less power.

2 wives makes sense pragmatically - women don’t want sleep with their husbands - women want to work - women want to leave after a certain amount of time - childcare is too expensive - one woman could cook one could clean Idk what you do about the cat fighting that is bound to happen tho But anyways I’m one of the few being honest about this (not what I wish to be true)

Capitalism: Here’s a machine that allows 1 worker to produce what previously required 100 workers. Luddites: But what about the other 99 jobs? If we listened to people who thought preserving obsolete labor was more important than productivity, we’d still be farming with sticks.

And who are the remaining 3/4?
25 women and girls. That’s how many were killed 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙙𝙖𝙮 in conflict zones in 2025. #Peace must mean safety for women and girls. 🔗 More on the @UN Secretary-General's report on #WomenPeaceSecurity: unwomen.org/en/news-stories/… #ForAllWomenAndGirls
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
According to the same UN report, women and girls accounted for one in four of over 37,000 civilian deaths in 2025. Men and boys were the remaining three-quarters. The report notes men are still likelier to be killed. unwomen.org/en/articles/fa…

If your economy depends on tourism , you don't put red tape on arrivals. Big mistake Thailand
Slow visa processing in countries whose visa-free privileges have been withdrawn has disrupted travel to Thailand, with many travellers opting for Vietnam instead. Airlines have also reported a large number of no-show passengers and urged the government to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Listen to the story or get the full story in the 1st comment.

Some argue that nature is safe only under socialist control. In China in 1958 and in the Soviet Union around 1960, the state set the harvest targets and decided what would happen to the birds and the rivers. One plan left a sea that had lost more than 90% of its water by 2009, and the other is linked to nearly 2 million deaths. Each time, scientists had warned in advance, and the office that set the target went ahead.

Just bc a fully libertarian society has never existed doesn’t mean the ideology has done nothing. *Every* time a country liberalises (deregulation, free trade), it booms. *Every* time it socialises (price controls, nationalising, heavy regulation), it stagnates. Quit LARPing.
Libertarians are forced to steal the successes of state capitalism because their ideologies have done nothing good. But if you actually implemented that same state capitalism, they will not be happy

Poland embraced shock therapy by cutting government spending, strengthening private property rights, and ending government price controls, essentially doing the opposite of what socialists advocate. How did it turn out? Poland has become one of the most successful economies among countries that emerged from behind the Iron Curtain. cc: @reason

Headcount and revenue growth divergence!
Microsoft is offering buyouts to 60,000(!) employees. Headcount and revenue growth is really starting to diverge at tech companies.
