1. On Oct. 1, I'll be joining @AmericanCRProj as counsel. Tomorrow marks my last day @PacificLegal. Although I'll be working under a different banner, it's on behalf of the same cause - that individuals should be treated as individuals and not based on race or sex -- albeit...
Fine, a Cheesecake Factory take:
1. I don’t think I’ve been to one in at least 10 years, maybe 15? Went to the Clarendon one with my parents a few times. The vanilla bean cheesecake is transcendent, the white chocolate raspberry one very good, and everything else fine but…
3. …massive menu ensures there’s something for everyone. That more excellent options exist elsewhere is less important than that everyone finds something that is fine.
4. The decor is gaudy and obviously intentionally so. The joke is fine.
5. Trump should absolutely spend…

The 40 hour workweek was created by economic growth, not labor advocates.
The 40-hour workweek wasn’t given to workers. It was fought for and won by generations of labor advocates who demanded fair treatment on the job. On 40-Hour Work Weekday, we honor the workers and unions who secured better wages, safer workplaces, and the right to a healthy work-life balance. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Labor Caucus, I’ll keep fighting to protect workers’ rights, strengthen unions, and make sure every hardworking Nevadan is treated with dignity and respect.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Industrialist Henry Ford popularized the 40-hour work week, and the U.S. government made it federal law through the Fair Labor Standards Act.

I asked ChatGPT to depict what a Cheesecake Factory would look like if Saddam Hussein applied his tastes to it and... yeah. This is very Trumpy.

There were two ways we could have learned about the value of the SAT as a diagnostic tool separating those prepared to do adequately or excel at college-level work and those unprepared to do so.
One way to do this would have been to simply accept the findings of the task force of leading academics that the UC system had designated to evaluate this question who submitted an exhaustive investigation in 2020 finding that the SAT was the best predictor of college performance that we have, that it was the best means of finding bright students from poor and minority backgrounds, and that the tests were not biased against minorities.
The other way was to get rid of the test in deference to an ideological freakout and see what happened.
We did the second thing and learned what every informed observer knew with certainty would happen, thus wasting more than half a decade finding the hard way what we already knew would happen, at the cost of nearly a generation of young people who enter the workforce with inadequate training and skills bearing a degree that has been fatally devalued as a signal of competency for all time.
Up to a third of students in UC Berkeley nuclear engineering classes arrive unprepared in math, per the department’s own faculty.
They asked UC to bring back the SAT/ACT for 2027. UC says it will bring it back Fall 2028 at the earliest.

Thank you for your attention to this matter!

My mom: I like reading, Grandpa likes math…
Daughter: But actually, you do have a lot in common. You were both teachers. You both really like Grandpa’s jokes.
My mom: Actually, so about Grandpa’s jokes…

“Good judging sometimes really does take guts,” Justice Alito writes. Judge Steven J. Menashi says Alito’s important new book So Ordered calls for humility about one’s own conclusions and independence from popular sentiment. That makes it a Burkean case for originalism.

Disappointed to see Dean go, but I recognize that he's earned his retirement. He is an exceptionally kind and thoughtful person who helped build Fed Soc into the amazing institution it is today, and I wish him best of luck in his new endeavors.
Reads a bit like a cheat sheet for the His Dark Materials novels, except missing anbaric/ electric and so on.
We need to immediately adopt some of these. Schizotron is my new favorite word.
