Half the country isn't on fire because of BBQs, pretty much every wildfire is on land that used to be peat bogs that we drained to make it easier to shoot things and put sheep there. We've turned our greatest defence against both wildfires and flooding in to a giant tinder box.

SENTENCED: September 2026: Tania Williams, 49, was stabbed to death outside her home in Norwich, in January 2026. She had separated from her husband 4 months earlier. Estranged husband Raymond Williams, 61, convicted of murder, has been sentenced to a minimum of 27 years.

12 August 2026: Rose Smith, 75, was injured during a reported burglary in north-east London. She was taken to hospital, where she died the following day. Jeffrey Dean Rose, 46, has been charged with her manslaughter and aggravated burglary with intent.

19 August 2026: Anna Kowalska, 50, died in hospital from injuries sustained in a house fire in west London. Pawel Kulpa, 34, and Slawomir Alama, 41, have been charged with her murder and eight counts of attempted murder, among other offences.

26 Aug 2026: Natalie McDonald, 34, died in a house fire in Grangetown, North Yorkshire. Her seven-year-old niece, Valentina Foster, also died in the blaze. Jaden Wright, 23, has been charged with two counts of murder as well as multiple grievous bodily harm offences.

SENTENCED, September 2026: Veronica Irwin, 74, died from hypothermia and sepsis after being left on the floor of her home in Carlisle, Cumbria, for two weeks in July 2023. Her son, Stewart Irwin, 56, was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to six and a half years in prison.
